Amalaki Ekadashi fast story

Addressing the eighty-eight thousand sages, Sutji said - ""O Vipro! It is a matter of ancient times. The great king Mandhata asked Vashishthaji - 'O Vashishthaji! If you are happy with me, then please tell me the law of such a fast, which will be beneficial for me.

Maharishi Vashishthaji said - 'O Rajan! The fast of Amalaki Ekadashi is the best of all fasts and the one that gives salvation in the end. 

King Mandhata said - ' O great sage! How did this Amalaki Ekadashi fast originate? What is the procedure for observing this fast? O knower of the Vedas! Please tell me all this story in detail.

Maharishi Vashishtha said - O Rajan! I tell you the story of this fast in detail - This fast is observed in the Shukla Paksha of Falgun month. All the sins of the fruit of this fast are completely destroyed. The virtue of this fast is equal to the fruit of one thousand cow's donation. Apart from its properties, the importance of Amalaki (Gooseberry) lies in the fact that it originated from the mouth of Lord Vishnu. Now let me tell you a legend. listen carefully

In ancient times there was a city named Vaidik. Brahmins, Vaishyas, Kshatriyas, Shudras, people of all four castes lived happily in that city. The sound of the Vedas always resounded in the city.

There was no sinner, miscreant, atheist etc. in that city. 

A Chandravanshi king named Chaitrarath used to rule in that city. He was a scholar of high order and a person of religious inclination, no one was poor nor stingy in his kingdom. All the people of that state were Vishnu-devotees. All the small and big residents there used to fast on every Ekadashi.

Once the Ekadashi named Amalaki of Shukla Paksha of Phalgun month came. On that day the king and every citizen, from old to child, happily observed fast on that Ekadashi. The king came to the temple with his subjects and started worshiping Dhatri with incense, lamp, naivedya, pancharatna, umbrella etc. after setting up the urn. They all started praising Dhatri in this way - 'O Dhatri! You are Brahma Swaroopa. Salutations to you, born of Brahmaji and the destroyer of all sins. You accept my prayer. You are respected by Shriramchandraji, I pray to you, take away all my sins.'

Everyone kept vigil in that temple at night. At night a fowler came to that place. He was a great sinner and a miscreant.

He used to take care of his family by using violence. He was extremely distraught with hunger and thirst, with the desire to get leprosy food, he sat in a corner of the temple. 

Sitting at that place, he started listening to the story of Lord Vishnu and the greatness of Ekadashi. In this way that fowler spent the whole night keeping vigil along with other people. In the morning everyone went to their respective residences. Similarly, the fowler also went to his home and had food there.

After some time, that fowler died.

He had committed animal violence, because of this, although he was a part of the severe hell, but on that day, due to the fast of Amalaki Ekadashi and the effect of Jagran, he was born at the place of King Vidurath. He was named Vasurath. When he grew up, he started running ten thousand villages with Chaturangini army and equipped with money and grains.  

He was equal to the sun in brightness, equal to the moon in brightness, equal to Lord Vishnu in valor and equal to the earth in forgiveness. He was extremely religious, truthful, Karmaveer and Vishnu-devotee. He used to follow the subjects equally. Giving charity was his daily duty.

Once King Vasurath went for hunting. Due to chance, he lost his way in the forest and due to lack of knowledge of the direction, he slept under a tree in the same forest. After the leprosy time the hill bandits came there and seeing the king alone, ran towards King Vasurath shouting 'Maro-Maro'. Those dacoits started saying that this evil king has killed our parents, sons and grandsons etc. and all our relatives and expelled them from the country. Now we must avenge our insult by killing it.  

Saying this, the dacoits started killing the king and started attacking him with weapons. The weapons of those dacoits would be destroyed as soon as they hit the king's body and would appear like flowers to the king. After some time, by the will of the Lord, the weapons of those bandits started attacking him, due to which they all fainted.

At the same time a divine goddess appeared from the king's body. That goddess was very beautiful and was adorned with beautiful clothes and ornaments. His brows were crooked. Fierce flames of anger were coming out of her eyes. 

At that time she seemed like Kaal. He destroyed all those dacoits in no time.

On waking up from sleep, the king saw many dacoits dead there. He started thinking who killed them? Who is my well wisher in this forest?

King Vasurath was thinking like this that only then there was a voice in the sky - ' Hey Rajan! Who can protect you in this world except Lord Vishnu!'

After listening to this Akashvani, the king remembered Lord Vishnu and bowed down to him, then returned to his city and started ruling happily. 

Maharishi Vashishtha said - 'O Rajan! All this was the effect of fasting on Amalaki Ekadashi, the person who fasts on even one Amalaki Ekadashi, he is successful in every work and finally attains Vaikunth Dham'.""
