अर्जुन ने कहा- ""हे कमलनयन! मैं ज्यों-ज्यों एकादशियों के व्रतों की कथाएँ सुन रहा हूँ, त्यों-त्यों अन्य एकादशियों के व्रतों की कथाएँ सुनने की मेरी जिज्ञासा बढ़ती ही जा रही है। हे मधुसूदन! अब कृपा कर आप चैत्र माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी के विषय में बतलाइये। इस एकादशी का नाम क्या है? इसमें कौन-से देवता का पूजन किया जाता है तथा इस व्रत का क्या विधान है? हे श्रीकृष्ण! यह सब आप मुझे विस्तारपूर्वक बताने की कृपा करें।""

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा- ""हे अर्जुन! एक बार यही प्रश्न पृथ्वीपति मान्धाता ने लोमश ऋषि से किया था, जो कुछ लोमश ऋषि ने राजा मान्धाता को बताया था, वही मैं तुमसे कह रहा हूँ। राजा मान्धाता ने धर्म के गुह्यतम रहस्यों के ज्ञाता महर्षि लोमश से पूछा- 'हे ऋषिश्रेष्ठ! मनुष्य के पापों का मोचन किस प्रकार सम्भव है? कृपा कर कोई ऐसा सरल उपाय बतायें, जिससे सहज ही पापों से छुटकारा मिल जाए।'
महर्षि लोमश ने कहा- 'हे नृपति! चैत्र मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम पापमोचिनी एकादशी है। उसके व्रत के प्रभाव से मनुष्यों के अनेक पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। मैं तुम्हें इस व्रत की कथा सुनाता हूँ, ध्यानपूर्वक श्रवण करो- प्राचीन समय में चैत्ररथ नामक एक वन था। उसमें अप्सराएँ किन्नरों के साथ विहार किया करती थीं। वहाँ सदैव वसन्त का मौसम रहता था, अर्थात उस जगह सदा नाना प्रकार के पुष्प खिले रहते थे। कभी गन्धर्व कन्याएँ विहार किया करती थीं, कभी देवेन्द्र अन्य देवताओं के साथ क्रीड़ा किया करते थे।

उसी वन में मेधावी नाम के एक ऋषि भी तपस्या में लीन रहते थे। वे शिवभक्त थे। एक दिन मञ्जुघोषा नामक एक अप्सरा ने उनको मोहित कर उनकी निकटता का लाभ उठाने की चेष्टा की, इसलिए वह कुछ दूरी पर बैठ वीणा बजाकर मधुर स्वर में गाने लगी। उसी समय शिव भक्त महर्षि मेधावी को कामदेव भी जीतने का प्रयास करने लगे। कामदेव ने उस सुन्दर अप्सरा के भ्रू का धनुष बनाया। कटाक्ष को उसकी प्रत्यन्चा बनाई और उसके नेत्रों को मञ्जुघोषा अप्सरा का सेनापति बनाया। इस तरह कामदेव अपने शत्रुभक्त को जीतने को तैयार हुआ। उस समय महर्षि मेधावी भी युवावस्था में थे और काफी हृष्ट-पुष्ट थे। उन्होंने यज्ञोपवीत तथा दण्ड धारण कर रखा था। वे दूसरे कामदेव के समान प्रतीत हो रहे थे। उस मुनि को देखकर कामदेव के वश में हुई मञ्जुघोषा ने धीरे-धीरे मधुर वाणी से वीणा पर गायन शुरू किया तो महर्षि मेधावी भी मञ्जुघोषा के मधुर गाने पर तथा उसके सौन्दर्य पर मोहित हो गए। वह अप्सरा मेधावी मुनि को कामदेव से पीड़ित जानकर उनसे आलिङ्गन करने लगी।

महर्षि मेधावी उसके सौन्दर्य पर मोहित होकर शिव रहस्य को भूल गए और काम के वशीभूत होकर उसके साथ रमण करने लगे।
काम के वशीभूत होने के कारण मुनि को उस समय दिन-रात का कुछ भी ज्ञान न रहा और काफी समय तक वे रमण करते रहे। तदुपरान्त मञ्जुघोषा उस मुनि से बोली- 'हे ऋषिवर! अब मुझे बहुत समय हो गया है, अतः स्वर्ग जाने की आज्ञा दीजिये।'
अप्सरा की बात सुनकर ऋषि ने कहा- 'हे मोहिनी! सन्ध्या को तो आयी हो, प्रातःकाल होने पर चली जाना।'
ऋषि के ऐसे वचनों को सुनकर अप्सरा उनके साथ रमण करने लगी। इसी प्रकार दोनों ने साथ-साथ बहुत समय बिताया।
मञ्जुघोषा ने एक दिन ऋषि से कहा- 'हे विप्र! अब आप मुझे स्वर्ग जाने की आज्ञा दीजिये।'

मुनि ने इस बार भी वही कहा- 'हे रूपसी! अभी ज्यादा समय व्यतीत नहीं हुआ है, कुछ समय और ठहरो।'
मुनि की बात सुन अप्सरा ने कहा- 'हे ऋषिवर! आपकी रात तो बहुत लम्बी है। आप स्वयं ही सोचिये कि मुझे आपके पास आये कितना समय हो गया। अब और ज्यादा समय तक ठहरना क्या उचित है?'
अप्सरा की बात सुन मुनि को समय का बोध हुआ और वह गम्भीरतापूर्वक विचार करने लगे। जब उन्हें समय का ज्ञान हुआ कि उन्हें रमण करते सत्तावन (५७) वर्ष व्यतीत हो चुके हैं तो उस अप्सरा को वह काल का रूप समझने लगे। इतना ज्यादा समय भोग-विलास में व्यर्थ चला जाने पर उन्हें बड़ा क्रोध आया। अब वह भयंकर क्रोध में जलते हुए उस तप नाश करने वाली अप्सरा की तरफ भृकुटी तानकर देखने लगे। क्रोध से उनके अधर काँपने लगे और इन्द्रियाँ बेकाबू होने लगीं। क्रोध से थरथराते स्वर में मुनि ने उस अप्सरा से कहा- 'मेरे तप को नष्ट करने वाली दुष्टा! तू महा पापिन और बहुत ही दुराचारिणी है, तुझ पर धिक्कार है। अब तू मेरे शाप (श्राप) से पिशाचिनी बन जा।'
मुनि के क्रोधयुक्त शाप (श्राप) से वह अप्सरा पिशाचिनी बन गई। यह देख वह व्यथित होकर बोली- 'हे ऋषिवर! अब मुझ पर क्रोध त्यागकर प्रसन्न होइए और कृपा करके बताइये कि इस शाप (श्राप) का निवारण किस प्रकार होगा? विद्वानों ने कहा है, साधुओं की सङ्गत अच्छा फल देने वाली होती है और आपके साथ तो मेरे बहुत वर्ष व्यतीत हुए हैं, अतः अब आप मुझ पर प्रसन्न हो जाइए, अन्यथा लोग कहेंगे कि एक पुण्य आत्मा के साथ रहने पर मञ्जुघोषा को पिशाचिनी बनना पड़ा।' मञ्जुघोषा की बात सुनकर मुनि को अपने क्रोध पर अत्यन्त ग्लानि हुई साथ ही अपनी अपकीर्ति का भय भी हुआ, अतः पिशाचिनी बनी मञ्जुघोषा से मुनि ने कहा- 'तूने मेरा बड़ा बुरा किया है, किन्तु फिर भी मैं तुझे इस शाप (श्राप) से मुक्ति का उपाय बतलाता हूँ। चैत्र मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की जो एकादशी है, उसका नाम पापमोचिनी है। उस एकादशी का उपवास करने से तेरी पिशाचिनी की देह से मुक्ति हो जाएगी।'

ऐसा कहकर मुनि ने उसको व्रत का सब विधान समझा दिया। फिर अपने पापों का प्रायश्चित करने के लिए वे अपने पिता च्यवन ऋषि के पास गये।
च्यवन ऋषि ने अपने पुत्र मेधावी को देखकर कहा- 'हे पुत्र! ऐसा क्या किया है तूने कि तेरे सभी तप नष्ट हो गए हैं? जिससे तुम्हारा समस्त तेज मलिन हो गया है?'
मेधावी मुनि ने लज्जा से अपना सिर झुकाकर कहा- 'पिताश्री! मैंने एक अप्सरा से रमण करके बहुत बड़ा पाप किया है। इसी पाप के कारण सम्भवतः मेरा सारा तेज और मेरे तप नष्ट हो गए हैं। कृपा करके आप इस पाप से छूटने का उपाय बतलाइये।'
ऋषि ने कहा- 'हे पुत्र! तुम चैत्र माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की पापमोचिनी एकादशी का विधि तथा भक्तिपूर्वक उपवास करो, इससे तुम्हारे सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाएंगे।'
अपने पिता च्यवन ऋषि के वचनों को सुनकर मेधावी मुनि ने पापमोचिनी एकादशी का विधिपूर्वक व्रत किया। उसके प्रभाव से उनके सभी पाप नष्ट हो गए। मञ्जुघोषा अप्सरा भी पापमोचिनी एकादशी का उपवास करने से पिशाचिनी की देह से छूट गई और पुनः अपना सुन्दर रूप धारण कर स्वर्गलोक चली गई। लोमश मुनि ने कहा-हे राजन! इस पापमोचिनी एकादशी के प्रभाव से समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। इस एकादशी की कथा के श्रवण व पठन से एक हजार गौदान करने का फल प्राप्त होता है। इस उपवास के करने से ब्रह्म हत्या करने वाले, स्वर्ण चुराने वाले, मद्यपान करने वाले, अगम्या गमन करने वाले आदि भयंकर पाप भी नष्ट हो जाते हैं और अन्त में स्वर्गलोक की प्राप्ति होती है।""

कथा-सार
इस कथा से स्पष्ट विदित है कि शारीरिक आकर्षण ज्यादा समय तक नहीं रहता। शारीरिक सौन्दर्य के लोभ में पड़कर मेधावी मुनि अपने तप संकल्प को भूल गए। यह भयंकर पाप माना जाता है, परन्तु भगवान श्रीहरि की पापमोचिनी शक्ति इस भयंकर पाप कर्म से भी सहज ही मुक्ति दिलाने में सक्षम है। जो मनुष्य सद्कर्मों का संकल्प करने के बाद में लोभ-लालच और भोग-विलास के वशीभूत होकर अपने संकल्प को भूल जाते हैं, वे घोर नरक के भागी बनते हैं।"

Arjun said - "" O Kamalnayan! As I listen to the stories of Ekadashi fasts, my curiosity to hear the stories of other Ekadashi fasts keeps on increasing. Hey Madhusudan! Now please tell me about the Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month. What is the name of this Ekadashi? Which deity is worshiped in this and what is the rule of this fast? Oh Lord Krishna! Lord Krishna said- ""O Arjuna! Once Prithvipati Mandhata had asked the same question to Lomash Rishi, I am telling you what Lomash Rishi had told King Mandhata. King Mandhata asked Maharishi Lomash, the knower of the most secret secrets of religion - ' O best sage! How is it possible to atone for the sins of man? Kindly tell me such a simple remedy, by which one can easily get rid of sins.'
Maharishi Lomash said - 'O Nripati! The name of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month is Papmochini Ekadashi. Many sins of humans are destroyed by the effect of his fast. Let me tell you the story of this fast, listen carefully - In ancient times there was a forest named Chaitrarath. Apsaras used to play with eunuchs in it. There was always spring season, that is, there were always different types of flowers blooming in that place. Sometimes Gandharva girls used to play, sometimes Devendra used to play with other gods.

In the same forest, a sage named Medhavi also lived engrossed in penance. He was a devotee of Shiva. One day an Apsara named Manjughosha tried to take advantage of her proximity by wooing her, so she sat at some distance and started singing melodiously by playing the veena. At the same time Kamdev also started trying to win the devotee of Shiva Maharishi Medhavi. Kamdev made a bow of the eyebrow of that beautiful Apsara. He made sarcasm his anchor and made her eyes the commander of Manjughosha Apsara. In this way Kamdev got ready to win his enemy's devotee. At that time Maharishi Medhavi was also in his youth and was very strong. He was wearing Yagyopaveet and punishment. He looked like another Kamdev. Seeing that sage, Manjughosha, who was under the control of Kamadeva, slowly started singing on the Veena with a melodious voice, then Maharishi Medhavi was also fascinated by Manjughosha's melodious singing and her beauty. Knowing that Apsara Medhavi Muni was suffering from Kamdev, she started hugging him.
Maharishi Medhavi, fascinated by her beauty, forgot the mystery of Shiva and started enjoying with her after being influenced by lust.
Due to the subordination of work, the sage had no knowledge of day and night at that time and he continued to enjoy for a long time. After that Manjughosha said to that sage - 'O Rishivar! Now it's been a long time for me, so allow me to go to heaven.'

After listening to Apsara, the sage said- 'O Mohini! You have come in the evening, leave in the morning.'
After listening to such words of the sage, Apsara started enjoying with him. Similarly, both of them spent a lot of time together.
One day Manjughosha said to the sage- 'O Vipra! Now you allow me to go to heaven.'
Muni said the same thing this time too - 'O Rupasi! Not much time has passed yet, wait for some more time.'
After listening to the sage, Apsara said - 'O Rishivar! Your night is very long. Think for yourself that it has been a long time since I came to you. Is it advisable to stay longer?'
After listening to Apsara, Muni realized the time and started thinking seriously. When he came to know about the time that fifty-seven (57) years had passed while enjoying him, he started considering that Apsara as the form of Kaal. He got very angry when so much time was wasted in enjoyment. Now burning with fierce anger, he started looking at that Apsara who destroys penance. His abdomen started trembling with anger and his senses started becoming uncontrollable. In a voice trembling with anger, the sage said to that Apsara - 'The wicked one who destroys my penance! You are a great sinner and very vicious, shame on you. Now you become a vampire by my curse.

Due to the angry curse (curse) of Muni, she became Apsara Pishachini. Seeing this, she said in distress - 'O Rishivar! Now leave your anger on me and be happy and please tell me how this curse will be removed? Scholars have said, company of sages is fruitful and I have spent many years with you, so now you be happy with me, otherwise people will say that Manjughosha had to become a vampire after living with a virtuous soul. ' After listening to Manjughosha, Muni felt very guilty about his anger and at the same time he was afraid of his defamation, so Muni said to Manjughosha, who became a vampire, 'You have done me a lot of bad, but still I want to free you from this curse. Let me show you the solution. The Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month is named Papmochini. By fasting on that Ekadashi, you will be freed from the body of a vampire.
By saying this, the sage explained to him all the rules of the fast. Then he went to his father Chyavan Rishi to atone for his sins.
Seeing his son Medhavi, Rishi Chyavan said - 'O son! What have you done that all your penance has been destroyed? Due to which all your brightness has become dirty?' Read this also: what is the secret of Ravana having ten heads
The Medhavi sage bowed his head in shame and said - 'Father! I have committed a great sin by having intercourse with an Apsara. Because of this sin, probably all my brightness and my penance have been destroyed. Please tell me the solution to get rid of this sin.
The sage said - 'O son! You fast with devotion and method on Papmochini Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month, all your sins will be destroyed by this.
By listening to the words of his father Chyavan Rishi, the Medhavi sage observed the fast of Papmochini Ekadashi methodically. All his sins were destroyed by his influence. Manjughosha Apsara also got rid of the body of Pishachini by fasting on Papmochini Ekadashi and again assumed her beautiful form and went to heaven. Lomash Muni said - O Rajan! All sins are destroyed by the effect of this Papmochini Ekadashi. Hearing and reading the story of this Ekadashi gives the result of donating one thousand cows. By observing this fast, the terrible sins of those who kill Brahma, steal gold, drink alcohol, travel unattainable, etc. are also destroyed and in the end one attains heaven.

Synopsis
It is clearly known from this story that physical attraction does not last long. In the greed of physical beauty, the Medhavi sage forgot his penance resolution. This is considered a terrible sin, but the sin-releasing power of Lord Sri Hari is easily able to get rid of this terrible sin. Those people who, after making a resolution to do good deeds, forget their resolution by being influenced by greed-greed and indulgence, they become partakers of severe hell.
