अर्जुन ने कहा- ""हे प्रभु! वैशाख माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का क्या नाम है तथा उसका क्या विधान है और उससे किस फल की प्राप्ति होती है, सो कृपापूर्वक विस्तार से बताएँ।""

अर्जुन की बात सुन श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा- ""हे अर्जुन! वैशाख माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम बरूथिनी एकादशी है। यह सौभाग्य प्रदान करने वाली है। इसका उपवास करने से प्राणी के समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। यदि इस उपवास को दुखी सधवा स्त्री करती है, तो उसे सौभाग्य की प्राप्ति होती है। बरूथिनी एकादशी के प्रभाव से ही राजा मान्धाता को स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति हुई थी। इसी प्रकार धुन्धुमार आदि भी स्वर्ग को गए थे। बरूथिनी एकादशी के उपवास का फल दस सहस्र वर्ष तपस्या करने के फल के समान है।
कुरुक्षेत्र में सूर्य ग्रहण के समय जो फल एक बार स्वर्ण दान करने से प्राप्त होता है, वही फल बरूथिनी एकादशी का उपवास करने से प्राप्त होता है। इस व्रत से प्राणी इहलोक और परलोक दोनों में सुख पाते हैं व अन्त में स्वर्ग के भागी बनते हैं।

हे राजन! इस एकादशी का उपवास करने से मनुष्य को इहलोक में सुख और परलोक में मुक्ति प्राप्त होती है। शास्त्रों में कहा गया है कि घोड़े के दान से हाथी का दान श्रेष्ठ है और हाथी के दान से भूमि का दान श्रेष्ठ है, इनमें श्रेष्ठ तिलों का दान है। तिल के दान से श्रेष्ठ है स्वर्ण का दान और स्वर्ण के दान से श्रेष्ठ है अन्न-दान। संसार में अन्न-दान से श्रेष्ठ कोई भी दान नहीं है। अन्न-दान से पितृ, देवता, मनुष्य आदि सब तृप्त हो जाते हैं। कन्यादान को शास्त्रों में अन्न-दान के समान माना गया है।
बरूथिनी एकादशी के व्रत से अन्नदान तथा कन्यादान दोनों श्रेष्ठ दानों का फल मिलता है। जो मनुष्य लालचवश कन्या का धन ले लेते हैं या आलस्य और कामचोरी के कारण कन्या के धन का भक्षण करते हैं, वे प्रलय के अन्त तक नरक भोगते रहते हैं या उनको अगले जन्म में बिलाव योनि में जाना पड़ता है।

जो प्राणी प्रेम से तथा यज्ञ सहित कन्यादान करते हैं, उनके पुण्य को चित्रगुप्त भी लिखने में असमर्थ हो जाते हैं। जो प्राणी इस बरूथिनी एकादशी का उपवास करते हैं, उन्हें कन्यादान का फल प्राप्त होता है। बरूथिनी एकादशी का व्रत करने वाले को दशमी के दिन से निम्नलिखित वस्तुओं का त्याग कर देना चाहिये-
1. कांसे के बर्तन में भोजन करना
2. मांस
3. मसूर की दाल
4. चना
5. कोदों
6. शाक
7. मधु (शहद)
8. दूसरे का अन्न
9. दूसरी बार भोजन करना
व्रती को पूर्ण ब्रह्मचर्य से रहना चाहिये। रात को सोना नहीं चाहिये, अपितु सारा समय शास्त्र चिन्तन और भजन-कीर्तन आदि में लगाना चाहिये। दूसरों की निन्दा तथा नीच पापी लोगों की संगत भी नहीं करनी चाहिये। क्रोध करना या झूठ बोलना भी वर्जित है। तेल तथा अन्न भक्षण की भी मनाही है।

हे राजन! जो मनुष्य इस एकादशी का व्रत विधानपूर्वक करते हैं, उन्हें स्वर्गलोक की प्राप्ति होती है, अतः मनुष्य को निकृष्ट कर्मों से डरना चाहिये। इस व्रत के माहात्म्य को पढ़ने से एक सहस्र गौदान का पुण्य प्राप्त होता है। इसका फल गंगा स्नान करने के फल से भी अधिक है।
कथा-सार
सौभाग्य का आधार संयम है। हर प्रकार संयम रखने से मनुष्य के सुख और सौभाग्य में वृद्धि होती है। यदि प्राणी में संयम नहीं है तो उसके द्वारा किये गए तप, त्याग व भक्ति-पूजा आदि सब व्यर्थ हो जाते हैं।"

Arjun said - "" Oh Lord! What is the name of the Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Vaishakh and what is its law and what fruit is obtained from it, so kindly tell in detail.

After listening to Arjuna, Shri Krishna said- ""O Arjuna! The name of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Vaishakh month is Baruthini Ekadashi. This is going to bring good fortune. By fasting it, all the sins of the creature are destroyed. If a sad woman does this fast, then she gets good luck. King Mandhata attained heaven due to the influence of Baruthini Ekadashi. Similarly Dhundhumar etc. also went to heaven. The result of fasting on Baruthini Ekadashi is equal to the result of ten thousand years of penance.
The fruit that is obtained by donating gold once at the time of solar eclipse in Kurukshetra, the same fruit is obtained by fasting on Baruthini Ekadashi. By observing this fast, the living beings get happiness in both this world and the hereafter, and in the end they become partakers of heaven.

Hey Rajan! By fasting on this Ekadashi, man gets happiness in this world and freedom in the hereafter. It has been said in the scriptures that the donation of an elephant is better than the donation of a horse, and the donation of land is better than the donation of an elephant, the best of these is the donation of sesame seeds. The donation of gold is better than the donation of sesame and the donation of food is better than the donation of gold. There is no better charity in the world than food donation. Fathers, gods, humans etc. all get satisfied by food donation. Kanyadan has been considered similar to food donation in the scriptures.
By fasting on Baruthini Ekadashi, one gets the fruits of both food donation and daughter donation. The men who greedily take the girl's money or eat the girl's money due to laziness and idleness, they continue to suffer hell till the end of the holocaust or they have to go to the cat's form in the next life.

Even Chitragupta is unable to write about the virtues of those who donate daughters with love and with sacrifice. The creatures who fast on this Baruthini Ekadashi get the fruit of Kanyadaan. One who observes Baruthini Ekadashi fast should give up the following things from Dashami day-
1. Eating in bronze utensils
2. Meat
3. Lentils
4. Gram
5. Codes
6. Herbs
7. Madhu (Honey)
8. Food of others
9. Eating for the second time
The fasting person should live with complete celibacy. One should not sleep at night, but the whole time should be spent in scripture contemplation and bhajan-kirtan etc. Criticism of others and company of lowly sinners should not be done. Getting angry or lying is also prohibited. Eating oil and grains is also prohibited.

Hey Rajan! Those people who fast on this Ekadashi according to the law, they get heaven, so a person should be afraid of bad deeds. By reciting the greatness of this fast, one gets the virtue of one thousand cows. Its fruit is more than the fruit of bathing in the Ganges.
Synopsis
The basis of good fortune is self-control. Keeping restraint in every way increases the happiness and good fortune of a man. If the creature does not have self-control, then all the penance, sacrifice and devotional worship done by him go in vain.
