योगिनी एकादशी व्रत कथा

अर्जुन ने कहा- ""हे त्रिलोकीनाथ! मैंने ज्येष्ठ माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की निर्जला एकादशी की कथा सुनी। अब आप कृपा करके आषाढ़ माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी की कथा सुनाइये। इस एकादशी का नाम तथा माहात्म्य क्या है? सो अब मुझे विस्तारपूर्वक बतायें।""

श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा- ""हे पाण्डु पुत्र! आषाढ़ माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम योगिनी एकादशी है। इसके व्रत से सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। यह व्रत इहलोक में भोग तथा परलोक में मुक्ति देने वाला है। हे अर्जुन! यह एकादशी तीनों लोकों में प्रसिद्ध है। इसके व्रत से सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। तुम्हें मैं पुराण में कही हुई कथा सुनाता हूँ, ध्यानपूर्वक श्रवण करो - कुबेर नाम का एक राजा अलकापुरी नाम की नगरी में राज्य करता था। वह शिव-भक्त था। उनका हेममाली नामक एक यक्ष सेवक था, जो पूजा के लिए फूल लाया करता था। हेममाली की विशालाक्षी नाम की अति सुन्दर स्त्री थी। एक दिन वह मानसरोवर से पुष्प लेकर आया, किन्तु कामासक्त होने के कारण पुष्पों को रखकर अपनी स्त्री के साथ रमण करने लगा। इस भोग-विलास में दोपहर हो गई।

हेममाली की राह देखते-देखते जब राजा कुबेर को दोपहर हो गई तो उसने क्रोधपूर्वक अपने सेवकों को आज्ञा दी कि तुम लोग जाकर पता लगाओ कि हेममाली अभी तक पुष्प लेकर क्यों नहीं आया। जब सेवकों ने उसका पता लगा लिया तो राजा के पास जाकर बताया- 'हे राजन! वह हेममाली अपनी स्त्री के साथ रमण कर रहा है।'

इस बात को सुन राजा कुबेर ने हेममाली को बुलाने की आज्ञा दी। डर से काँपता हुआ हेममाली राजा के सामने उपस्थित हुआ। उसे देखकर कुबेर को अत्यन्त क्रोध आया और उसके होंठ फड़फड़ाने लगे।

राजा ने कहा- 'अरे अधम! तूने मेरे परम पूजनीय देवों के भी देव भगवान शिवजी का अपमान किया है। मैं तुझे शाप (श्राप) देता हूँ कि तू स्त्री के वियोग में तड़पे और मृत्युलोक में जाकर कोढ़ी का जीवन व्यतीत करे।'

कुबेर के शाप (श्राप) से वह तत्क्षण स्वर्ग से पृथ्वी पर आ गिरा और कोढ़ी हो गया। उसकी स्त्री भी उससे बिछड़ गई। मृत्युलोक में आकर उसने अनेक भयंकर कष्ट भोगे, किन्तु शिव की कृपा से उसकी बुद्धि मलिन न हुई और उसे पूर्व जन्म की भी सुध रही। अनेक कष्टों को भोगता हुआ तथा अपने पूर्व जन्म के कुकर्मो को याद करता हुआ वह हिमालय पर्वत की तरफ चल पड़ा।

चलते-चलते वह मार्कण्डेय ऋषि के आश्रम में जा पहुँचा। वह ऋषि अत्यन्त वृद्ध तपस्वी थे। वह दूसरे ब्रह्मा के समान प्रतीत हो रहे थे और उनका वह आश्रम ब्रह्मा की सभा के समान शोभा दे रहा था। ऋषि को देखकर हेममाली वहाँ गया और उन्हें प्रणाम करके उनके चरणों में गिर पड़ा।

हेममाली को देखकर मार्कण्डेय ऋषि ने कहा- 'तूने कौन-से निकृष्ट कर्म किये हैं, जिससे तू कोढ़ी हुआ और भयानक कष्ट भोग रहा है।'

महर्षि की बात सुनकर हेममाली बोला- 'हे मुनिश्रेष्ठ! मैं राजा कुबेर का अनुचर था। मेरा नाम हेममाली है। मैं प्रतिदिन मानसरोवर से फूल लाकर शिव पूजा के समय कुबेर को दिया करता था। एक दिन पत्नी सहवास के सुख में फँस जाने के कारण मुझे समय का ज्ञान ही नहीं रहा और दोपहर तक पुष्प न पहुँचा सका। तब उन्होंने मुझे शाप (श्राप) दिया कि तू अपनी स्त्री का वियोग और मृत्युलोक में जाकर कोढ़ी बनकर दुख भोग। इस कारण मैं कोढ़ी हो गया हूँ तथा पृथ्वी पर आकर भयंकर कष्ट भोग रहा हूँ, अतः कृपा करके आप कोई ऐसा उपाय बतलाये, जिससे मेरी मुक्ति हो।'

मार्कण्डेय ऋषि ने कहा- 'हे हेममाली! तूने मेरे सम्मुख सत्य वचन कहे हैं, इसलिए मैं तेरे उद्धार के लिए एक व्रत बताता हूँ। यदि तू आषाढ़ माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की योगिनी नामक एकादशी का विधानपूर्वक व्रत करेगा तो तेरे सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाएँगे।'

महर्षि के वचन सुन हेममाली अति प्रसन्न हुआ और उनके वचनों के अनुसार योगिनी एकादशी का विधानपूर्वक व्रत करने लगा। इस व्रत के प्रभाव से अपने पुराने स्वरूप में आ गया और अपनी स्त्री के साथ सुखपूर्वक रहने लगा।

हे राजन! इस योगिनी एकादशी की कथा का फल अट्ठासी सहस्र ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराने के बराबर है। इसके व्रत से सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं और अन्त में मोक्ष प्राप्त करके प्राणी स्वर्ग का अधिकारी बनता है।""

कथा-सार

मनुष्य को पूजा आदि धर्म में आलस्य या प्रमाद नहीं करना चाहिए, अपितु मन को संयम में रखकर सदैव भगवान की सेवा में तत्पर रहना चाहिए।"

Yogini Ekadashi fasting story

Arjun said - "" Hey Trilokinath! I heard the story of Nirjala Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyestha month. Now please narrate the story of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Ashadh month. What is the name and greatness of this Ekadashi? So now tell me in detail."

Shri Krishna said - "" Oh son of Pandu! The name of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Ashadh month is Yogini Ekadashi. All sins are destroyed by its fasting. This fast is going to give enjoyment in this world and freedom in the hereafter. Hey Arjun! This Ekadashi is famous in all the three worlds. All sins are destroyed by its fasting. I will tell you the story told in Purana, listen carefully - A king named Kuber used to rule in the city named Alkapuri. He was a devotee of Shiva. He had a Yaksha servant named Hemmali, who used to bring flowers for worship. Hemmali had a very beautiful woman named Vishalakshi. One day he brought flowers from Mansarovar, but due to lust, he kept the flowers and started enjoying with his wife. It was afternoon in this indulgence.

While waiting for Hemmali, when it was noon for King Kuber, he angrily ordered his servants to go and find out why Hemmali had not yet brought flowers. When the servants found out about him, they went to the king and told - 'O king! That Hemmali is having fun with his wife.'

Hearing this, King Kubera ordered Hemmali to be called. Trembling with fear, Hemmali appeared before the king. Seeing him, Kubera got very angry and his lips started fluttering.

The king said - ' Hey Adham! You have insulted Lord Shiva, the God of my most revered gods. I curse you (curse) that you suffer in separation from a woman and go to the land of death and live the life of a leper.'

Due to the curse of Kuber, he immediately fell from heaven to earth and became a leper. His wife also left him. After coming to the land of death, he suffered many terrible hardships, but by the grace of Shiva, his intelligence did not get dirty and he also remembered his previous birth. Suffering many hardships and remembering the misdeeds of his previous birth, he went towards the Himalayan Mountains.

While walking, he reached the hermitage of sage Markandeya. That sage was a very old ascetic. He looked like another Brahma and his hermitage was as beautiful as the assembly of Brahma. Seeing the sage, Hemmali went there and bowed to him and fell at his feet.

Seeing Hemmali, sage Markandeya said- 'What evil deeds have you done, due to which you have become a leper and are suffering terribly.'

After listening to Maharishi, Hemmali said - 'O Munishrestha! I was a retainer of King Kuber. My name is Hemmali. I used to bring flowers from Mansarovar every day and give them to Kubera at the time of Shiva Puja. One day, because of my wife being engrossed in the pleasure of cohabitation, I had no knowledge of time and could not deliver flowers till noon. Then he cursed me that you should be separated from your wife and go to the land of death and suffer as a leper. Because of this, I have become a leper and am suffering terribly after coming to earth, so please tell me a solution that can help me get rid of it.'

Markandeya Rishi said- 'O Hemmali! You have spoken the truth in front of me, so I tell a vow for your salvation. If you fast on the Ekadashi named Yogini of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Ashada, then all your sins will be destroyed.

Hemmali was very happy after hearing the words of Maharishi and according to his words started fasting on Yogini Ekadashi. With the effect of this fast, he returned to his old form and started living happily with his wife.

Hey Rajan! The result of the story of this Yogini Ekadashi is equivalent to feeding eighty eight thousand Brahmins. All sins are destroyed by its fasting and in the end, after attaining salvation, the creature becomes entitled to heaven.

Man should not be lazy or careless in worship etc. religion, but keeping the mind in control, he should always be ready in the service of God.
