श्रावण पुत्रदा एकादशी व्रत कथा

एकादशियों के माहात्म्य का आनन्द लेते हुए धनुर्धर अर्जुन ने कहा- ""हे प्रभु! ये कल्याणकारी और महापुण्यदायी कथाएँ सुनकर मेरे आनन्द की सीमा नहीं है और मेरी जिज्ञासा बढ़ती जा रही है। हे कमलनयन! अब आप मुझे श्रावण माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी की कथा सुनाने की कृपा करें। इस एकादशी का क्या नाम है तथा इसके व्रत का क्या विधान है? इसमें किस देवता का पूजन किया जाता है और इसका व्रत करने से किस फल की प्राप्ति होती है?""

श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा- ""हे धनुर्धर! श्रावण माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी की कथा के श्रवण मात्र से ही अनन्त यज्ञ का फल प्राप्त होता है। हे पार्थ! द्वापर युग के आरम्भ में ही महिष्मती नाम की एक नगरी थी। उस नगरी में महाजित नाम का एक राजा राज्य करता था। वह पुत्रहीन था, इसलिए वह सदा दुखी रहता था। उसे वह राज्य-सुख और वैभव, सभी कुछ बड़ा ही कष्टदायक प्रतीत होता था, क्योंकि पुत्र के बिना मनुष्य को इहलोक और परलोक दोनों में सुख नहीं मिलता है।

राजा ने पुत्र प्राप्ति के बहुत उपाय किये, किन्तु उसका हर उपाय निष्फल रहा। जैसे-जैसे राजा महाजित वृद्धावस्था की ओर बढ़ता जा रहा था, वैसे-वैसे उसकी चिन्ता भी बढ़ती जा रही थी।

एक दिन राजा ने अपनी सभा को सम्बोधित करके कहा - 'न तो मैंने अपने जीवन में कोई पाप किया है और न ही अन्यायपूर्वक प्रजा से धन एकत्रित किया है, न ही कभी प्रजा को कष्ट दिया है और न कभी देवता और ब्राह्मणों का निरादर किया है।

मैंने प्रजा का सदैव अपने पुत्र की तरह पालन किया है, कभी किसी से ईर्ष्या भाव नहीं किया, सभी को एक समान समझा है। मेरे राज्य में कानून भी ऐसे नहीं हैं जो प्रजा में अनावश्यक डर उत्पन्न करें। इस प्रकार धर्मयुक्त राज्य करने पर भी मैं इस समय अत्यन्त कष्ट पा रहा हूँ, इसका क्या कारण है? मेरी समझ में कुछ नहीं आ रहा है। आप इस पर विचार करें कि इसका क्या कारण है और क्या इस जीवन में मैं इस कष्ट से मुक्त हो पाऊँगा?

राजा के इस कष्ट के निवारण के लिए मन्त्री आदि वन को गये, ताकि वहाँ जाकर किसी ऋषि-मुनि को राजा का दुख बताकर कोई समाधान पा सकें। वन में जाकर उन्होंने श्रेष्ठ ऋषि-मुनियों के दर्शन किये।

उस वन में वयोवृद्ध और धर्म के ज्ञाता महर्षि लोमश भी रहते थे। वे सभी जन महर्षि लोमश के पास गये। उन सबने महर्षि लोमश को दण्डवत प्रणाम किया और उनके सम्मुख बैठ गये। महर्षि के दर्शन से सभी को बड़ी प्रसन्नता हुई और सबने महर्षि लोमश से प्रार्थना की - 'हे देव! हमारे अहो भाग्य हैं कि हमें आपके दर्शनों का सौभाग्य प्राप्त हुआ।'

मन्त्री की बात सुन लोमश ऋषि ने कहा - 'हे मन्त्रीवर! आप लोगों की विनम्रता और सद्व्यवहार से मैं अति प्रसन्न हूँ। आप मुझसे अपने आने का प्रयोजन कहें। मैं आपके कार्य को अपने सामर्थ्य के अनुसार अवश्य ही करूँगा, क्योंकि हमारा शरीर ही परोपकार के लिए बना है।

लोमश ऋषि के ऐसे मृदु वचन सुनकर मन्त्री ने कहा - 'हे ऋषिवर! आप हमारी सभी बातों को जानने में ब्रह्मा से भी ज्यादा समर्थ हैं, अतः आप हमारे सन्देह को दूर कीजिए। महिष्मती नामक नगरी के हमारे महाराज महाजित बड़े ही धर्मात्मा व प्रजावत्सल हैं। वह प्रजा का, पुत्र की तरह धर्मानुसार पालन करते हैं, किन्तु फिर भी वे पुत्रहीन हैं। हे महामुनि! इससे वह अत्यन्त दुखी रहते हैं। हम लोग उनकी प्रजा हैं। हम भी उनके दुख से दुखी हो रहे हैं, क्योंकि प्रजा का यह कर्तव्य है कि राजा के सुख में सुख माने और दुख में दुख माने। हमें उनके पुत्रहीन होने का अभी तक कारण ज्ञात नहीं हुआ है, इसलिए हम आपके पास आये हैं। अब आपके दर्शन करके, हमको पूर्ण विश्वास है कि हमारा दुख अवश्य ही दूर हो जायेगा, क्योंकि महान पुरुषों के दर्शन मात्र से ही प्रत्येक कार्य की सिद्धि हो जाती है, अतः आप हमें बताने की कृपा करें कि किस विधान से हमारे महाराज पुत्रवान हो सकते हैं। हे ऋषिवर! यह आपका हम पर व हमारे राज्य की प्रजा पर बड़ा ही उपकार होगा।'

ऐसी करुण प्रार्थना सुनकर लोमश ऋषि नेत्र बन्द करके राजा के पूर्व जन्मों पर विचार करने लगे। कुछ पलों बाद उन्होंने विचार करके कहा - 'हे भद्रजनो! यह राजा पिछले जन्म में अत्यन्त उद्दण्ड था तथा बुरे कर्म किया करता था। उस जन्म में यह एक गाँव से दूसरे गाँव में घूमा करता था।

एक बार ज्येष्ठ माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी के दिन की बात है, यह दो दिन से भूखा था। दोपहर के समय एक जलाशय पर जल पीने गया। उस स्थान पर उस समय ब्यायी हुई एक गाय जल पी रही थी। राजा ने उसको प्यासी ही भगा दिया और स्वयं जल पीने लगा।

हे श्रेष्ठ पुरुषों! इसलिए राजा को यह कष्ट भोगने पड़ रहे हैं।

एकादशी के दिन भूखा रहने का फल यह हुआ कि इस जन्म में यह राजा है और प्यासी गाय को जलाशय से भगाने के कारण पुत्रहीन है।'

यह जान सभी सभासद प्रार्थना करने लगे - 'हे -ऋषि श्रेष्ठ! शास्त्रों में ऐसा लिखा है कि पुण्य से पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं, अतः कृपा करके आप हमें कोई ऐसा उपाय बताइये, जिससे हमारे राजा के पूर्व जन्म के पाप नष्ट हो जायें और उन्हें पुत्ररत्न की प्राप्ति हो।'

सभासदों की प्रार्थना सुनकर लोमश मुनि ने कहा - 'हे श्रेष्ठ पुरुषो! यदि तुम सब श्रावण माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की पुत्रदा एकादशी का व्रत और रात्रि जागरण करो और उस व्रत का फल राजा के निमित्त कर दो, तो तुम्हारे राजा के यहाँ पुत्र उत्पन्न होगा। राजा के सभी कष्टों का नाश हो जायेगा।'

इस उपाय को जानकर मन्त्री सहित सभी ने महर्षि को कोटि-कोटि धन्यवाद दिया तथा उनका आशीर्वाद लेकर अपने राज्य में लौट आये। तदुपरान्त उन्होंने लोमश ऋषि की आज्ञानुसार पुत्रदा एकादशी का विधानपूर्वक उपवास किया और द्वादशी को उसका फल राजा को दे दिया।

इस पुण्य के प्रभाव से रानी ने गर्भ धारण किया और नौ माह पश्चात एक अत्यन्त तेजस्वी पुत्र को जन्म दिया।

हे पाण्डु पुत्र! इसलिए इस एकादशी का नाम पुत्रदा पड़ा। पुत्र की इच्छा रखने वाले मनुष्य को विधानपूर्वक श्रावण माह के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी का व्रत करना चाहिये। इस व्रत के प्रभाव से इहलोक में सुख और परलोक में स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति होती है।""

कथा-सार

पाप कर्म करते समय मनुष्य यह नहीं सोचता कि वह क्या कर रहा है, परन्तु शास्त्रों से विदित होता है कि मनुष्य का छोटे-से-छोटा पाप भी उसे भयंकर दुख भोगने को विवश कर देता है, अतः मनुष्य को पाप कर्म करने से डरना चाहिये, क्योंकि पाप नामक यह दैत्य जन्म-जन्मान्तर तक उसका पीछा नहीं छोड़ता। प्राणी को चाहिये कि सत्यव्रत का पालन करते हुए भगवान के प्रति पूरी श्रद्धा व भक्ति रखे और यह बात सदैव याद रखे कि किसी के दिल को दुखाने से बड़ा पाप दुनिया में कोई दूसरा नहीं है।"

Shravan Putrada Ekadashi fasting story

Shri Krishna said - "" O archer! Only by hearing the story of the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Shravan, the fruit of the eternal yagya is obtained. Hey Partha! In the beginning of Dwapar Yuga, there was a city named Mahishmati. A king named Mahajit used to rule in that city. He was childless, so he was always sad. To him that kingdom-happiness and glory, everything seemed very painful, because without a son, man does not get happiness in both this world and the other world.

The king took many measures to get a son, but all his measures failed. As King Mahajit was moving towards old age, his worries were also increasing.

One day the king addressed his gathering and said - 'Neither have I committed any sin in my life, nor have I collected money from the people unjustly, nor have I ever caused pain to the people, nor have I ever disrespected the Gods and Brahmins. Is.

I have always followed the people like my son, never felt jealous of anyone, considered everyone equal. The laws in my state are also not such that they create unnecessary fear among the subjects. Hearing such soft words of Lomash Rishi, the minister said - 'O Rishivar! You are more able than Brahma to know all our things, so you remove our doubts. Our Maharaj Mahajit of the city named Mahishmati is very pious and Prajavatsal. He takes care of the people like a son, according to religion, but still he is sonless. O great sage! This makes him very sad. We are his subjects. We are also saddened by his sorrow, because it is the duty of the subjects to accept happiness in the king's happiness and sorrow in his sorrow. We have not yet come to know the reason for his childlessness, that is why we have come to you. Now by seeing you, we have full faith that our sorrow will definitely go away, because every work is accomplished only by seeing great men, so please tell us by which method our Maharaj can have a son. Hearing such a compassionate prayer, Lomash Rishi closed his eyes and started thinking about the king's previous births. After a few moments he thought and said - 'O gentlemen! This king was very rude in his previous birth and used to do bad deeds. In that birth he used to roam from one village to another.

Once it was a matter of Ekadashi day of Shukla Paksha of Jyestha month, it was hungry for two days. Went to drink water at a reservoir in the afternoon. A cow given birth at that time was drinking water at that place. The king made her thirsty and started drinking water himself.

O best of men! That's why the king has to suffer this.

The result of being hungry on the day of Ekadashi was that he is a king in this birth and is sonless because of driving away the thirsty cow from the reservoir.

Knowing this, all the members started praying - 'O Rishi Shrestha! It is written in the scriptures that sins are destroyed by virtue, so please tell us a solution that can destroy the sins of our king's previous birth and he will get a son.'

After listening to the prayers of the councilors, Lomash Muni said - ' O great men! If all of you keep fast and night vigil on Putrada Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month and make the fruit of that fast for the king's sake, then a son will be born in your king's place. All the troubles of the king will be destroyed.

Knowing this remedy, everyone including the minister thanked Maharishi a lot and returned to their kingdom after taking his blessings. After that, according to the order of Lomash Rishi, he fasted on Putrada Ekadashi and gave its fruit to the king on Dwadashi.

With the effect of this virtue, the queen conceived and after nine months gave birth to a very bright son.

O son of Pandu! That's why this Ekadashi was named Putrada. A man desirous of having a son should observe a fast on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of the month of Shravan. With the effect of this fast one attains happiness in this world and heaven in the hereafter.
