रमा एकादशी व्रत कथा

भाव-विह्वल होते हुए अर्जुन ने कहा- ""हे श्रीकृष्ण! अब आप मुझे कार्तिक माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी की कथा सुनाइए। इस एकादशी का क्या नाम है तथा इसमें किस देवता का पूजन किया जाता है? इस एकादशी का व्रत करने से किस फल की प्राप्ति होती है? कृपा करके यह सब विधानपूर्वक कहिए।""

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा- ""हे अर्जुन! कार्तिक माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम रमा है। इसका व्रत करने से सभी पापों का शमन हो जाता है। इसकी कथा इस प्रकार है, ध्यानपूर्वक श्रवण करो-

पौराणिक काल में मुचुकुंद नाम का राजा राज्य करता था।

इन्द्र, वरुण, कुबेर, विभीषण आदि उसके मित्र थे। वह बड़ा सत्यवादी तथा विष्णुभक्त था। उसका राज्य बिल्कुल निष्कंटक था। उसकी चन्द्रभागा नाम की एक कन्या थी, जिसका विवाह उसने राजा चन्द्रसेन के पुत्र सोभन से कर दिया। वह राजा एकादशी का व्रत बड़े ही नियम से करता था और उसके राज्य में सभी क्रठोरता से इस नियम का पालन करते थे।

एक बार की बात है कि सोभन अपनी ससुराल आया हुआ था। वह कार्तिक का महीना था। उसी मास में महापुण्यदायिनी रमा एकादशी आ गई। इस दिन सभी व्रत रखते थे। चन्द्रभागा ने सोचा कि मेरे पति तो बड़े कमजोर हृदय के हैं, वे एकादशी का व्रत कैसे करेंगे, जबकि पिता के यहां तो सभी को व्रत करने की आज्ञा है। मेरा पति राजाज्ञा मानेगा, तो बहुत कष्ट पाएगा। चन्द्रभागा को जिस बात का डर था वही हुआ। राजा ने आदेश जारी किया कि इस समय उनका दामाद राज्य में पधारा हुआ है, अतः सारी प्रजा विधानपूर्वक एकादशी का व्रत करे। जब दशमी आई तब राज्य में ढिंढो़रा पिटा, उसे सुनकर सोभन अपनी पत्नी के पास गया और बोला - 'हे प्रिय! तुम मुझे कुछ उपाय बतलाओ, क्योंकि मैं उपवास नहीं कर सकता, यदि मैं उपवास करूंगा तो अवश्य ही मर जाऊंगा।'

पति की बात सुन चन्द्रभागा ने कहा - 'हे स्वामी! मेरे पिता के राज्य में एकादशी के दिन कोई भी भोजन नहीं कर सकता। यहां तक कि हाथी, घोड़ा, ऊंट, पशु आदि भी तृण, अन्न, जल आदि ग्रहण नहीं करते, फिर भला मनुष्य कैसे भोजन कर सकते हैं? यदि आप उपवास नहीं कर सकते तो किसी दूसरे स्थान पर चले जाइए, क्योंकि यदि आप यहां रहेंगे तो आपको व्रत तो अवश्य ही करना पड़ेगा।'

पत्नी की बात सुन सोभन ने कहा - 'हे प्रिय! तुम्हारी राय उचित है, परंतु मैं व्रत करने के डर से किसी दूसरे स्थान पर नहीं जाऊंगा, अब मैं व्रत अवश्य ही करूंगा, परिणाम चाहे कुछ भी क्यों न हो, भाग्य में लिखे को भला कौन टाल सकता है।'

सभी के साथ सोभन ने भी एकादशी का व्रत किया और भूख और प्यास से अत्यंत व्याकुल होने लगा।

सूर्य नारायण भी अस्त हो गए और जागरण के लिए रात्रि भी आ गई। वह रात सोभन को असहनीय दुख देने वाली थी। दूसरे दिन सूर्योदय होने से पूर्व ही भूख-प्यास के कारण सोभन के प्राण-पखेरू उड़ गए।

राजा ने सोभन के मृत शरीर को जल-प्रवाह करा दिया और अपनी पुत्री को आज्ञा दी कि वह सती न हो और भगवान विष्णु की कृपा पर भरोसा रखे।

चन्द्रभागा अपने पिता की आज्ञानुसार सती नहीं हुई। वह अपने पिता के घर रहकर एकादशी के व्रत करने लगी।

उधर रमा एकादशी के प्रभाव से सोभन को जल से निकाल लिया गया और भगवान विष्णु की कृपा से उसे मंदराचल पर्वत पर धन-धान्य से परिपूर्ण तथा शत्रु रहित देवपुर नाम का एक उत्तम नगर प्राप्त हुआ। उसे वहां का राजा बना दिया गया। उसके महल में रत्न तथा स्वर्ण के खंभे लगे हुए थे। राजा सोभन स्वर्ण तथा मणियों के सिंहासन पर सुंदर वस्त्र तथा आभूषण धारण किए बैठा था। गंधर्व तथा अप्सराएं नृत्य कर उसकी स्तुति कर रहे थे। उस समय राजा सोभन मानो दूसरा इन्द्र प्रतीत हो रहा था। उन्हीं दिनों मुचुकुंद नगर में रहने वाला सोमशर्मा नाम का एक ब्राह्मण तीर्थयात्रा के लिए निकला हुआ था। घूमते-घूमते वह सोभन के राज्य में जा पहुंचा, उसको देखा। वह ब्राह्मण उसको राजा का जमाई जानकर उसके निकट गया। राजा सोभन ब्राह्मण को देख आसन से उठ खड़ा हुआ और अपने श्वसुर तथा स्त्री चन्द्रभागा की कुशल क्षेम पूछने लगा। सोभन की बात सुन सोमशर्मा ने कहा - 'हे राजन! हमारे राजा कुशल से हैं तथा आपकी पत्नी चन्द्रभागा भी कुशल है। अब आप अपना वृत्तांत बतलाइए। आपने तो रमा एकादशी के दिन अन्न-जल ग्रहण न करने के कारण प्राण त्याग दिए थे। मुझे बड़ा विस्मय हो रहा है कि ऐसा विचित्र और सुंदर नगर जिसको न तो मैंने कभी सुना और न कभी देखा है, आपको किस प्रकार प्राप्त हुआ?'

इस पर सोभन ने कहा - 'हे देव! यह सब कार्तिक माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की रमा एकादशी के व्रत का फल है। इसी से मुझे यह अनुपम नगर प्राप्त हुआ है, किंतु यह अस्थिर है।'

सोभन की बात सुन ब्राह्मण बोला - 'हे राजन! यह अस्थिर क्यों है और स्थिर किस प्रकार हो सकता है, सों आप मुझे समझाइए। यदि इसे स्थिर करने के लिए मैं कुछ कर सका तो वह उपाय मैं अवश्य ही करूंगा।' राजा सोभन ने कहा - 'हे ब्राह्मण देव! मैंने वह व्रत विवश होकर तथा श्रद्धारहित किया था। उसके प्रभाव से मुझे यह अस्थिर नगर प्राप्त हुआ, परंतु यदि तुम इस वृत्तांत को राजा मुचुकुंद की पुत्री चन्द्रभागा पे कहोगे तो वह इसको स्थिर बना सकती हे।'

राजा सोभन की बात सुन ब्राह्मण अपने नगर को लौट आया और उसने चन्द्रभागा से सारा वृत्तांत कह सुनाया। इस पर राजकन्या चन्द्रभागा बोली - 'हे ब्राह्मण देव! आप क्या वह सब दृश्य प्रत्यक्ष देखकर आए हैं या अपना स्वप्न कह रहे हैं?'

चन्द्रभागा की बात सुन ब्राह्मण बोला - 'हे राजकन्या! मैंने तेरे पति सोभन तथा उसके नगर को प्रत्यक्ष देखा है, किंतु वह नगर अस्थिर है। तू कोई ऐसा उपाय कर जिससे कि वह स्थिर हो जाए।'

ब्राह्मण की बात सुन चन्द्रभागा बोली - 'हे ब्राह्मण देव! आप मुझे उस नगर में ले चलिए, मैं अपने पति को देखना चाहती हूं। मैं अपने व्रत के प्रभाव से उस नगर को स्थिर बना दूंगी।'

चन्द्रभागा के वचनों को सुनकर वह ब्राह्मण उसे मंदराचल पर्वत के पास वामदेव के आश्रम में ले गया। वामदेव ने उसकी कथा को सुनकर चन्द्रभागा का मंत्रों से अभिषेक किया। चन्द्रभागा मंत्रों तथा व्रत के प्रभाव से दिव्य देह धारण करके पति के पास चली गई।

सोभन ने अपनी पत्नी चन्द्रभागा को देखकर उसे प्रसन्नतापूर्वक आसन पर अपने पास बैठा लिया।

चन्द्रभागा ने कहा - 'हे स्वामी! अब आप मेरे पुण्य को सुनिए, जब मैं अपने पिता के घर में आठ वर्ष की थी, तब ही से मैं सविधि एकादशी का व्रत कर रही हूं। उन्हीं व्रतों के प्रभाव से आपका यह नगर स्थिर हो जाएगा और सभी कर्मों से परिपूर्ण होकर प्रलय के अंत तक स्थिर रहेगा।' चन्द्रभागा दिव्य स्वरूप धारण करके तथा दिव्य वस्त्रालंकारो से सजकर अपने पति के साथ सुखपूर्वक रहने लगी। हे अर्जुन! यह मैंने रमा एकादशी का माहात्म्य कहा है। जो मनुष्य रमा एकादशी के व्रत को करते हैं, उनके सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। जो मनुष्य रमा एकादशी का माहात्म्य सुनते हैं, वह अंत समय में विष्णु लोक को जाते हैं।""

कथा-सार

भगवान श्रीहरि बड़े दयालु और क्षमावान हैं। श्रद्धापूर्वक या विवश होकर भी यदि कोई उनका पूजन या एकादशी व्रत करता है तो वह उसे भी उत्तम फल प्रदान करते हैं, परंतु मनुष्य को चाहिए कि वह भगवान का पूजन पूरी श्रद्धा से करे।

सोभन अपनी पत्नी द्वारा श्रद्धापूर्वक किए गए एकादशी व्रतों के कारण अपने राज्य को स्थिर कर सका। ऐसी सुकर्मा पत्नी भगवान श्रीहरि की कृपा से ही प्राप्त हो सकती है।"

Rama Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Being emotional, Arjun said - "" Oh Shri Krishna! Now you tell me the story of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. What is the name of this Ekadashi and which deity is worshiped in it? What is the result of fasting on this Ekadashi? Please say all this methodically."

f Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month is Rama. By observing this fast all the sins are absolved. Its story is as follows, listen carefully-

In mythological times, a king named Muchukund used to rule.

Indra, Varun, Kuber, Vibhishan etc. were his friends. He was very truthful and a devotee of Vishnu. His rule was absolutely flawless. He had a daughter named Chandrabhaga, whom he married to Sobhan, the son of King Chandrasena. That king used to fast on Ekadashi very strictly and everyone in his kingdom strictly followed this rule.

Once upon a time Sobhan had come to his in-laws house. It was the month of Kartik. In the same month, Mahapunyadayini Rama Ekadashi came. Everyone used to fast on this day. Chandrabhaga thought that my husband is of a very weak heart, how will he fast on Ekadashi, while everyone is allowed to fast at the father's place. If my husband obeys the king's order, he will suffer a lot. What Chandrabhaga feared happened. The king issued an order that at this time his son-in-law has arrived in the state, so all the people should fast on Ekadashi according to the law. When Dashami came, there was a lot of fanfare in the state, Sobhan went to his wife after hearing it and said - 'O dear! You tell me some remedy, because I cannot fast, if I fast I will surely die.'

After listening to her husband, Chandrabhaga said - 'O Swami! No one can eat on Ekadashi day in my father's kingdom. Even elephants, horses, camels, animals etc. do not take grass, grains, water etc., then how can humans eat? If you cannot fast, then go to some other place, because if you stay here, you will definitely have to fast.'

After listening to his wife, Sobhan said - 'O dear! Your opinion is correct, but I will not go to any other place for fear of fasting, now I will definitely fast, no matter what the result, who can avoid what is written in fate.'

Along with everyone, Sobhan also fasted on Ekadashi and started feeling extremely distraught with hunger and thirst.

Surya Narayan also set and night also came for Jagran. That night was going to give unbearable pain to Sobhan. On the second day before sunrise, Sobhan's life and wings flew away due to hunger and thirst.

The king made Sobhan's dead body flow in water and ordered his daughter not to commit sati and trust in the grace of Lord Vishnu.

Chandrabhaga did not commit sati as per her father's order. She stayed at her father's house and started fasting on Ekadashi.

On the other hand, due to the effect of Rama Ekadashi, Sobhan was taken out of the water and by the grace of Lord Vishnu, he got a perfect city named Devpur, full of wealth and enemy-free on the Mandarachal mountain. He was made the king there. There were pillars of gems and gold in his palace. King Sobhan was sitting on a throne of gold and gems wearing beautiful clothes and ornaments. Gandharva and Apsaras were praising him by dancing. At that time King Sobhan seemed to be another Indra. At the same time, a Brahmin named Somasharma living in Muchukund Nagar had left for pilgrimage. While roaming around, he reached Sobhan's kingdom, saw him. That Brahmin went near him knowing him as the son-in-law of the king. Seeing the Brahmin, King Sobhan stood up from his seat and inquired about the well-being of his father-in-law and wife Chandrabhaga. Somsharma said after listening to Sobhan - ' Hey Rajan! Our king is well and your wife Chandrabhaga is also well. Now tell your story. You had given up your life because of not taking food and water on the day of Rama Ekadashi. I wonder how you found such a strange and beautiful city, which I have never heard of or seen before.'

On this Sobhan said - 'O God! All this is the result of fasting on Rama Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Kartik. That is why I have got this unique city, but it is unstable.'

After listening to Sobhan, Brahmin said - 'O Rajan! Why is it unstable and how can it be stable, so you explain to me. If I can do something to stabilize it, I will definitely do that.' King Sobhan said - 'O Brahmin Dev! I had observed that fast under compulsion and without faith. Due to her influence I got this unstable city, but if you tell this story on Chandrabhaga, the daughter of King Muchukund, she can make it stable.'

After listening to King Sobhan, the Brahmin returned to his city and told the whole story to Chandrabhaga. On this Princess Chandrabhaga said - 'O Brahmin God! Have you come seeing all those scenes directly or are you telling your dream?'

After listening to Chandrabhaga, the Brahmin said - 'O princess! I have seen your husband Sobhan and his city directly, but that city is unstable. You do such a solution that it becomes stable.

After listening to Brahmin, Chandrabhaga said - 'O Brahmin God! You take me to that city, I want to see my husband. I will make that city stable with the effect of my fast.'

After listening to the words of Chandrabhaga, that Brahmin took him to the hermitage of Vamdev near Mandarachal mountain. Vamdev anointed Chandrabhaga with mantras after listening to her story. With the influence of Chandrabhaga mantras and fast, she assumed a divine body and went to her husband.

Seeing his wife Chandrabhaga, Sobhan happily made her sit on the seat beside him.

Chandrabhaga said - 'O Swami! Now you listen to my virtue, since I was eight years old in my father's house, I have been fasting on Savidhi Ekadashi. With the effect of those fasts, this city of yours will become stable and will remain stable till the end of holocaust after being full of all deeds. Chandrabhaga wearing divine form and adorned with divine clothes started living happily with her husband. Hey Arjun! I have called this the greatness of Rama Ekadashi. Those who observe the fast of Rama Ekadashi, all their sins are destroyed. Those people who listen to the greatness of Rama Ekadashi, they go to Vishnu Lok in the last time.

Synopsis

Lord Sri Hari is very kind and forgiving. If someone worships him or observes Ekadashi fast even with devotion or compulsion, then he also gives good results to him, but man should worship God with full devotion.

Sobhan was able to stabilize his kingdom because of the Ekadashi fasts performed devotedly by his wife. Such a virtuous wife can be obtained only by the grace of Lord Sri Hari."
