History of Vadakunathan Temple
It is believed that this temple was built by Lord Parshuram himself. Lord Parshuram was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This temple is 1000 years old, so there is no accurate evidence regarding its origin. According to Malayalam historian VVK Valath, this temple was once a former Dravidian kavu (god place). Later the temple came under the influence of new religious sects that came into existence after the 6th century, which included Buddhism, Jainism and Vaishnavism.

The story of the origin of the Vadakunathan temple is briefly described in the Brahmanda Purana, apart from this a lot of information about this temple is available in other contexts as well. Most historians believe that this temple was built by Lord Pashuram.

Lord Pashurama performed a yagya to purify himself and balance his karma after the massacre, after which he gave all the land to the brahmins as dakshina. After this, he requested Varuna, the god of the sea, to provide him a piece of land on the seashore for penance. After which he got a land, which is now Kerala.

Lord Parashurama first built the Vadakunathan temple on this land. After this, he had built many more temples. For this reason also this temple is considered important.
