Mythology
This story is described in the Puranas about this Jyotirlinga - In the south country, near Devagiri Parvat, there lived a very bright Taponisht Brahmin named Sudharma. His wife's name was Sudeha, both of them had great love for each other. He didn't have any kind of trouble. But they had no children.

Astrological calculations revealed that Sudeha's womb could not give birth to a child. Sudeha was very desirous of children. He urged Sudharma to remarry his younger sister.

At first Sudharma did not like this thing. But in the end he had to bow down to his wife's insistence. They could not resist his request. He married his wife's younger sister Ghushma and brought her home. Ghushma was a very polite and virtuous woman. She was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. She used to make one hundred and one earthly Shivling everyday and worship them with true devotion of heart.

By the grace of Lord Shiva, after a few days, a very beautiful and healthy child was born from her womb. Both Sudeha and Ghushma were overjoyed by the birth of the child. The days of both were passing very comfortably. But don't know how after a few days a bad thought took birth in Sudeha's mind. She started thinking, I have nothing in this house. Everything belongs to Ghushma. Till now the sprout of Sudeha's mind in the form of bad thoughts had taken the form of a huge tree. She took possession of my husband as well. The child is also his. This evil thought slowly started growing in his mind. Here, that child of Ghushma was also growing up. Slowly he became young. He also got married.

Finally one day Sudeha killed Ghushma's young son while he was sleeping at night. Taking his dead body, he threw it in the same pond in which Ghushma used to immerse the dead Shivlings everyday. Everyone came to know about this in the morning. There was uproar in the whole house. Sudharma and her daughter-in-law both started crying bitterly, beating their heads. But Ghushma remained engrossed in the worship of Lord Shiva as usual. As if nothing had happened. After finishing the puja, she went to leave the dead Shivlings in the pond. When she started returning from the pond, at the same time her beloved Lal was seen coming out from inside the pond. He came as usual and fell at the feet of Ghushma.

As if coming from somewhere nearby. At the same time Lord Shiva also appeared there and asked Ghushma to ask for a boon. He became very angry due to the heinous act of Sudeha. He was seen intent on slitting her throat with his trishul. Ghushma folded hands and said to Lord Shiva - 'Lord! If you are pleased with me, then forgive that unfortunate sister of mine. Surely he has committed a very heinous sin but by your mercy I got my son back. Now you forgive him and Lord!

I have one more request, for the welfare of the people, you should stay at this place forever. Lord Shiva accepted both these things of his. Appearing in the form of Jyotirlinga, he started residing there. He became famous here by the name of Ghushmeshwar Mahadev because of his devotion to Sati Shiv devotee Ghushma. The glory of Ghushmeshwar-Jyotirlinga has been described in great detail in the Puranas. His philosophy is unfailingly fruitful for both the world and the hereafter.
