ओंकारेश्वर मंदिर का इतिहास और इससे जुड़ी पौराणिक कहानी

ओंकारेश्वर मंदिर कहाँ है?

भगवान शिव को समर्पित ओंकारेश्वर मंदिर मध्य प्रदेश राज्य के खंडवा नामक जिले में नर्मदा नदी के निकट शिवपुरी और मान्धाता द्वीप पर अवस्थित है। यह मंदिर इसलिए भी अधिक ख़ास है क्योंकि यहाँ भगवान शिव 12 ज्योतिर्लिंगों में से एक ज्योतिर्लिंग ओंकारेश्वर स्थापित है। कहा जाता है कि इस स्थान पर नर्मदा नदी स्वयं ‘ॐ’ के आकार में बहती हैं। साथ ही बताते चलें कि जब तक सभी तीर्थों का जल तीर्थ यात्री ओंकारेश्वर में अर्पित नहीं करते हैं तब तक तीर्थ यात्रा पूर्ण नहीं मानी जाती है।

ओंकारेश्वर मंदिर का निर्माण किसने करवाया?

ओंकारेश्वर महादेव मंदिर के निर्माण से संबंधित इतिहास में कुछ ख़ास तथ्य मौजूद नहीं है। अब तक जो भी ऐतिहासिक प्रमाण मिले हैं उनके हिसाब से इस मंदिर का निर्माण के लिए सन 1063 में राजा उदयादित्य ने चार पत्थरों को स्थापित करवाया था जिनपर संस्कृति भाषा में अंकित स्तोत्रम थे। इसके पश्चात सन 1195 में राजा भारत सिंह चौहान ने इस स्थान को पुनर्निमित करवाया। इसके बाद मान्धाता पर सिंधियाँ, मालवा, परमार ने राज किया। वर्ष 1824 में इस क्षेत्र को ब्रिटिश सरकार को सौंप दिया गया। 

ओंकारेश्वर मंदिर की कहानी?

ओंकारेश्वर मंदिर से जुड़ी तीन कहानियां प्रचलित हैं जिसमें से एक कहानी के अनुसार एक बार नारद जी विंध्यांचल पर्वत पहुंचे। वहां पहुँचते ही पर्वतराज कहे जाने वाले विंध्यांचल ने नारद जी का आदर-सत्कार किया। इसके बाद विंध्यांचल पर्वतराज ने कहा कि मैं सर्वगुण संपन्न हूँ, मेरे पर सब कुछ है। नारद जी पर्वतराज की बातों को सुनते रहे और चुप खड़े रहे। जब पर्वतराज की बात समाप्त हुई तो नारद जी उनसे बोले कि मुझे ज्ञात है कि तुम सर्वगुण सम्पन्न हो परन्तु फिर भी तुम समेरु पर्वत की भांति ऊँचे नहीं हो। सुमेरु पर्वत को देखो जिसका भाग देवलोकों तक पहुंचा हुआ है परन्तु तुम वहां तक कभी नहीं पहुँच सकते हो।

नारद जी इन बातों को सुन विंध्यांचल पर्वतराज खुद को ऊँचा साबित करने के लिए सोच-विचार करने लगे। नारद जी की बातें उन्हें बहुत चुभ रही थी और वे बहुत परेशान हो गए क्योंकि यहाँ पर उनके अहंकार की हार हुई। अपने आप को सबसे ऊँचा बनाने की कामना के चलते उन्होंने भगवान शिव की पूजा करने का मन बनाया। उन्होंने लगभग 6 महीने तक भगवान शिव की कठोर तपस्या कर प्रसन्न किया। अंततः भगवान शिव विंध्यांचल से अत्यधिक प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने प्रकट होकर वरदान मांगने को कहा।  

इसपर विंध्यांचल पर्वत ने कहा कि हे! प्रभु मुझे बुद्धि प्रदान करें और मैं जिस भी कार्य को आरंभ करू वह सिद्ध हो। इस प्रकार विंध्यांचल पर्वत ने वरदान प्राप्त किया।  भगवान शिव को देख आस-पास के ऋषि मुनि वहां पर आगये और उन्होंने भगवान शिव से यहाँ वास करने की प्रार्थना की। इस प्रकार भगवान शिव ने सभी की बात मानी, वहां पर स्थापित लिंग दो लिंगम में विभाजित हो गया।  इसमें से विंध्यांचल द्वारा स्थापित पार्थिव लिंग का नाम ममलेश्वर लिंग पड़ा जबकि जहाँ भगवान शिव का वास माना जाता है उसे ओंकारेश्वर शिवलिंग के नाम से जाना जाने लगा।

ओंकारेश्वर लिंग से जुड़ी दूसरी कहानी कहती है कि  राजा मान्धाता ने यहाँ पर्वत भगवान शिव का ध्यान करते हुए घोर तपस्या की थी।  उनकी तपस्या से भगवान शिव अत्यधिक प्रसन्न हुए थे और राजा ने उन्हें यहाँ सदैव के लिए निवास करने के लिए कहा था। तभी से यहाँ पर ओंकारेश्वर नामक शिवलिंग स्थापित है जिसकी आज तक अत्यधिक मान्यता है।  
तीसरी कहानी के संबंध में कहा जाता है कि जब देवताओं और दैत्यों के बीच भीषण युद्ध हुआ और सभी देवता दैत्यों से पराजित हो गए तब उन्होंने अपनी हताशा में भगवान शिव की पूजा-अर्चना की थी। देवताओं की सच्ची श्रद्धा भक्ति देख भगवान शिव ओंकारेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप  हुए और उन्होंने सभी दैत्यों को पराजित किया।   

ओंकारेश्वर मंदिर कितना प्राचीन है? 

उज्जैन ओंकारेश्वर मंदिर के संबंध में मिले ऐतिहासिक प्रमाणों के अनुसार यह आज से लगभग 5500 वर्ष प्राचीन माना जाता है। ओंकारेश्वर मंदिर के बारे में हमें पुराणों में भी वर्णन मिलता है इस तरह से हम इसकी प्राचीनता का अंदाज़ा लगा सकते हैं।    

ओंकारेश्वर में कौन कौन सी नदी का संगम है?

प्रसिद्ध तीर्थ स्थानों में से एक ओंकारेश्वर मध्य प्रदेश में नर्मदा और कावेरी नदी के संगम पर स्थित है। बता दें कि ओंकारेश्वर में दो ज्योतिर्लिंग स्थापित है एक तो ममलेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग और एक ओंकारेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग। ओंकारेश्वर मान्धाता पर्वत और शिवपुरी के मध्य में स्थित है जबकि दक्षिणी तट पर ममलेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग अवस्थित है।

ओंकारेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग कैसे पहुंचे?

यदि आप हवाई मार्ग से ओंकारेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग पहुंचना चाहते हैं तो आपको ओंकारेश्वर से 77 किलोमीटर दूर अवस्थी इंदौर एयरपोर्ट तक जाना होगा। इसके बाद बस या टैक्सी  के माध्यम से यहाँ तक आसानी से पहुंचा जा सकता है। मध्य प्रदेश के उज्जैन, खंडवा और इंदौर से कई साड़ी बस सेवाऐं भी यहाँ तक आपको पहुंचा सकती हैं।  

रेल मार्ग से जाने के लिए भी इसके निकटतम कोई रेलवे स्टेशन नहीं है।  रेलवे के द्वारा जाने के लिए आपपको इंदौर या खंडवा रेलवे स्टेशन तक आने के बाद कोई बस या टैक्सी करनी होगी।

Where is Omkareshwar Temple?

The Omkareshwar temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is situated on the Shivpuri and Mandhata islands near the Narmada river in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh state. This temple is even more special because one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is established here. It is said that at this place the Narmada river itself flows in the shape of 'Om'. Along with this, let us tell that until the pilgrims do not offer the water of all the pilgrimages in Omkareshwar, the pilgrimage is not considered complete.

Who got the Omkareshwar temple built?

There is no specific fact in the history related to the construction of Omkareshwar Mahadev Temple. According to whatever historical evidence has been found so far, for the construction of this temple, in the year 1063, King Udayaditya had installed four stones, which had stotrams written in Sanskrit language. After this, in 1195, Raja Bharat Singh Chauhan got this place rebuilt. After this Mandhata was ruled by Sindhis, Malwa, Parmar. In the year 1824, this area was handed over to the British Government.

Story of Omkareshwar Temple?

Three stories related to Omkareshwar temple are popular, according to one of which, once Narad ji reached Vindhyachal mountain. As soon as he reached there, Vindhyachal, who was called Parvatraj, honored Narad ji. After this Vindhyachal Parvatraj said that I am full of all qualities, everything is on me. Narad ji kept listening to Parvatraj's words and remained silent. When Parvatraj's talk ended, Narad ji said to him that I know that you are full of all qualities, but still you are not as high as Mount Sameru. Look at Mount Sumeru, whose part has reached the heavenly bodies, but you can never reach there.

Narad ji, listening to these things Vindhyachal Parvatraj started thinking to prove himself high. Narad ji's words were very piercing to him and he became very upset because his ego was defeated here. Due to the desire to make himself the highest, he made up his mind to worship Lord Shiva. He pleased Lord Shiva by doing severe penance for about 6 months. Finally Lord Shiva was very pleased with Vindhyachal and he appeared and asked to ask for a boon.

On this the Vindhyachal mountain said that hey! May God give me wisdom and whatever work I start may be successful. In this way Vindhyachal mountain got the boon. Seeing Lord Shiva, the nearby sages came there and prayed to Lord Shiva to reside here. Thus Lord Shiva obeyed everyone, the linga installed there got divided into two lingams. Out of this, Parthiv Linga established by Vindhyachal was named Mamleshwar Linga while the place where Lord Shiva is believed to reside came to be known as Omkareshwar Shivling.

Another story related to Omkareshwar Linga says that King Mandhata did severe penance here while meditating on the mountain Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was very pleased with his penance and the king asked him to reside here forever. Since then, a Shivling named Omkareshwar is established here, which is highly recognized till today.
Regarding the third story, it is said that when there was a fierce battle between the gods and the demons and all the gods were defeated by the demons, they worshiped Lord Shiva in their desperation. Seeing the true devotion of the deities, Lord Shiva took the form of Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga and defeated all the demons.

How old is the Omkareshwar temple?

According to the historical evidence found in relation to Ujjain Omkareshwar Temple, it is considered to be about 5500 years old from today. We find description about Omkareshwar temple in Puranas as well, in this way we can get an idea of its antiquity.

Which river has its confluence at Omkareshwar?

Omkareshwar, one of the famous pilgrimage places, is situated at the confluence of Narmada and Kaveri rivers in Madhya Pradesh. Tell that two Jyotirlingas are established in Omkareshwar, one Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga and one Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga. Omkareshwar is located between Mandhata mountain and Shivpuri while Mamleshwar Jyotirlinga is situated on the southern bank.

How to reach Omkareshwar Jyotirling?

If you want to reach Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga by air then you have to go to Awasthi Indore Airport which is 77 km away from Omkareshwar. After this one can easily reach here via bus or taxi. Many saree bus services can also take you here from Ujjain, Khandwa and Indore in Madhya Pradesh.

There is no nearest railway station to go by rail also. To go by railway, you will have to take a bus or taxi after reaching Indore or Khandwa railway station.
