परम एकादशी व्रत कथा

अर्जुन ने कहा - ""हे कमलनयन! अब आप अधिक (लौंद) मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम तथा उसके व्रत का विधान बताने की कृपा करें। इसमें किस देवता का पूजन किया जाता है तथा इसके व्रत से किस फल की प्राप्ति होती है?""

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा - ""हे अर्जुन! इस एकादशी का नाम परम है। इसके व्रत से सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं तथा मनुष्य को इहलोक में सुख तथा परलोक में सद्गति प्राप्त होती है। इसका व्रत पूर्व में कहे विधानानुसार करना चाहिए और भगवान विष्णु का धूप, दीप, नैवेद्य, पुष्प आदि से पूजन करना चाहिए।

इस एकादशी की पावन कथा जो कि महर्षियों के साथ काम्पिल्य नगरी में हुई थी, वह मैं तुमसे कहता हूं। ध्यानपूर्वक श्रवण करो- काम्पिल्य नगरी में सुमेधा नाम का एक अत्यंत धर्मात्मा ब्राह्मण रहता था। उसकी स्त्री अत्यंत पवित्र तथा पतिव्रता थी। किसी पूर्व पाप के कारण वह दंपती अत्यंत दरिद्रता का जीवन व्यतीत कर रहे थे।

ब्राह्मण को भिक्षा मांगने पर भी भिक्षा नहीं मिलती थी। उस ब्राह्मण की पत्नी वस्त्रों से रहित होते हुए भी अपने पति की सेवा करती थी तथा अतिथि को अन्न देकर स्वयं भूखी रह जाती थी और पति से कभी किसी वस्तु की मांग नहीं करती थी। दोनों पति-पत्नी घोर निर्धनता का जीवन व्यतीत कर रहे थे।

एक दिन ब्राह्मण अपनी स्त्री से बोला- 'हे प्रिय! जब मैं धनवानों से धन की याचना करता हूँ तो वह मुझे मना कर देते हैं। गृहस्थी धन के बिना नहीं चलती, इसलिए यदि तुम्हारी सहमति हो तो मैं परदेस जाकर कुछ काम करूं, क्योंकि विद्वानों ने कर्म की प्रशंसा की है।'

ब्राह्मण की पत्नी ने विनीत भाव से कहा- 'हे स्वामी! मैं आपकी दासी हूं। पति अच्छा और बुरा जो कुछ भी कहे, पत्नी को वही करना चाहिए। मनुष्य को पूर्व जन्म में किए कर्मों का फल मिलता है। सुमेरु पर्वत पर रहते हुए भी मनुष्य को बिना भाग्य के स्वर्ण नहीं मिलता। पूर्व जन्म में जो मनुष्य विद्या और भूमि दान करते हैं, उन्हें अगले जन्म में विद्या और भूमि की प्राप्ति होती है। ईश्वर ने भाग्य में जो कुछ लिखा है, उसे टाला नहीं जा सकता।

यदि कोई मनुष्य दान नहीं करता तो प्रभु उसे केवल अन्न ही देते हैं, इसलिए आपको इसी स्थान पर रहना चाहिए, क्योंकि मैं आपका विछोह नहीं सह सकती। पति बिना स्त्री की माता, पिता, भाई, श्वसुर तथा सम्बंधी आदि सभी निंदा करते हैं, ईसलिए हे स्वामी! कृपा कर आप कहीं न जाएं, जो भाग्य में बदा होगा, वह यहीं प्राप्त हो जाएगा।'

स्त्री की सलाह मानकर ब्राह्मण परदेश नहीं गया। इसी प्रकार समय बीतता रहा। एक बार कौण्डिन्य ऋषि वहां आए।

ऋषि को देखकर ब्राह्मण सुमेधा और उसकी स्त्री ने उन्हें प्रणाम किया और बोले- 'आज हम धन्य हुए। आपके दर्शन से आज हमारा जीवन सफल हुआ।' ऋषि को उन्होंने आसन तथा भोजन दिया। भोजन देने के बाद पतिव्रता ब्राह्मणी ने कहा- 'हे ऋषिवर! कृपा कर आप मुझे दरिद्रता का नाश करने की विधि बतलाइए। मैंने अपने पति को परदेश में जाकर धन कमाने से रोका है। मेरे भाग्य से आप आ गए हैं। मुझे पूर्ण विश्वास है कि अब मेरी दरिद्रता शीघ्र ही नष्ट हो जाएगी, अतः आप हमारी दरिद्रता नष्ट करने के लिए कोई उपाय बताएं।

ब्राह्मणी की बात सुन कौण्डिन्य ऋषि बोले- 'हे ब्राह्मणी! मल मास की कृष्ण पक्ष की परम एकादशी के व्रत से सभी पाप, दुख और दरिद्रता आदि नष्ट हो जाते हैं। जो मनुष्य इस व्रत को करता है, वह धनवान हो जाता है। इस व्रत में नृत्य, गायन आदि सहित रात्रि जागरण करना चाहिए।

भगवान शंकर ने कुबेरजी को इसी व्रत के करने से धनाध्यक्ष बना दिया था। इसी व्रत के प्रभाव से सत्यवादी राजा हरिश्चन्द्र को पुत्र, स्त्री और राज्य की प्राप्ति हुई थी।'

तदुपरांत कौण्डिन्य ऋषि ने उन्हें एकादशी के व्रत का समस्त विधान कह सुनाया। ऋषि ने कहा- 'हे ब्राह्मणी! पंचरात्रि व्रत इससे भी ज्यादा उत्तम है। परम एकादशी के दिन प्रातःकाल नित्य कर्म से निवृत्त होकर विधानपूर्वक पंचरात्रि व्रत आरम्भ करना चाहिए। जो मनुष्य पांच दिन तक निर्जल व्रत करते हैं, वे अपने मा-पिता और स्त्री सहित स्वर्ग लोक को जाते हैं। जो मनुष्य पांच दिन तक संध्या को भोजन करते हैं, वे स्वर्ग को जाते हैं। जो मनुष्य स्नान करके पांच दिन तक ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराते हैं, वे समस्त संसार को भोजन कराने का फल पाते हैं। जो मनुष्य इस व्रत में अश्व दान करते हैं, उन्हें तीनों लोकों को दान करने का फल मिलता है। जो मनुष्य उत्तम ब्राह्मण को तिल दान करते हैं, वे तिल की संख्या के बराबर वर्षो तक विष्णुलोक में वास करते हैं। जो मनुष्य घी का पात्र दान करते हैं, वह सूर्य लोक को जाते हैं। जो मनुष्य पांच दिन तक ब्रह्मचर्यपूर्वक रहते हैं, वे देवांगनाओं के साथ स्वर्ग को जाते हैं। हे ब्राह्मणी! तुम अपने पति के साथ इसी व्रत को धारण करो। इससे तुम्हें अवश्य ही सिद्धि और अंत में स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति होगी।

कौण्डिन्य ऋषि के वचनानुसार ब्राह्मण और उसकी स्त्री ने परम एकादशी का पांच दिन तक व्रत किया। व्रत पूर्ण होने पर ब्राह्मण की स्त्री ने एक राजकुमार को अपने यहां आते देखा।

राजकुमार ने ब्रह्माजी की प्रेरणा से एक उत्तम घर जो कि सब वस्तुओं से परिपूर्ण था, उन्हें रहने के लिए दिया। तदुपरांत राजकुमार ने आजीविका के लिए एक गांव दिया। इस प्रकार ब्राह्मण और उसकी स्त्री इस व्रत के प्रभाव से इहलोक में अनंत सुख भोगकर अंत में स्वर्गलोक को गए।

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा- हे अर्जुन! जो मनुष्य परम एकादशी का व्रत करता है, उसे सभी तीर्थों व यज्ञों आदि का फल प्राप्त होता है। जिस प्रकार संसार में दो पैरों वालों में ब्राह्मण, चार पैरों वालों में गौ, देवताओं में देवेंद्र श्रेष्ठ हैं, उसी प्रकार मासों में अधिक (लौंद) मास उत्तम है। इस माह में पंचरात्रि अत्यंत पुण्य देने वाली होती है। इस माह में पद्मिनी और परम एकादशी भी श्रेष्ठ है। इनके व्रत से सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं, अतः दरिद्र मनुष्य को एक व्रत जरूर करना चाहिए। जो मनुष्य अधिक मास में स्नान तथा एकादशी व्रत नहीं करते, उन्हें आत्महत्या करने का पाप लगता है। यह मनुष्य योनि बड़े पुण्यों से मिलती है, इसलिए मनुष्य को एकादशी का व्रत अवश्य करना चाहिए।

हे कुंती पुत्र अर्जुन! जो तुमने पूछा था, वह मैंने विस्तारपूर्वक बतला दिया। अब इन व्रतों को भक्तिपूर्वक करो। जो मनुष्य अधिक (लौंद) मास की परम एकादशी का व्रत करते हैं, वे स्वर्गलोक में जाकर देवराज इन्द्र के समान सुखों का भोग करते हुए तीनों लोकों में पूजनीय होते हैं।""

कथा-सार

ब्राह्मणों, ऋषि-मुनियों व सज्जन पुरुषों का आदर करने वाले मनुष्यों पर प्रभु अवश्य ही कृपा करते हैं। श्रीलक्ष्मी की प्राप्ति मात्र भाग-दौड़ से नहीं होती, अपितु इसके लिए यत्नपूर्वक परिश्रम करने की आवश्यकता होती है। यत्नपूर्वक किया गया परिश्रम भगवान की कृपा से अवश्य ही पूर्ण होता है।"

 

Param Ekadashi fasting story

Arjun said - "" O Kamalnayan! Now please tell me the name of the Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Adhik (Laund) and the method of fasting for it. Which deity is worshiped in this and what fruit is obtained from its fasting?

Lord Krishna said - ""O Arjuna! The name of this Ekadashi is Param. All sins are destroyed by its fasting and man gets happiness in this world and salvation in the hereafter. Its fasting should be done according to the rules mentioned earlier and Lord Vishnu should be worshiped with incense, lamp, naivedya, flowers etc.

Let me tell you the holy story of this Ekadashi which happened with the sages in the city of Kampilya. Listen carefully- A very pious Brahmin named Sumedha lived in Kampilya city. His wife was very pious and chaste. Due to some past sin, the couple was living a life of extreme poverty.

Brahmin did not get alms even after begging. The wife of that Brahmin used to serve her husband even though she was devoid of clothes and herself remained hungry after giving food to the guest and never demanded anything from her husband. Both husband and wife were leading a life of extreme poverty.

One day a Brahmin said to his wife - 'O dear! When I ask for money from the rich, they refuse me. Household does not run without money, so if you agree, I will go abroad and do some work, because scholars have praised karma.'

Brahmin's wife humbly said - 'O Swami! I am your maid Whatever the husband says, good or bad, the wife should do the same. Man gets the fruits of his deeds done in his previous birth. Man does not get gold without luck even while living on Mount Sumeru. Those who donate knowledge and land in the previous birth, they get knowledge and land in the next life. What God has written in fate cannot be avoided.

If a person does not donate, then God gives him only food, so you should stay in this place, because I cannot bear your separation. Mother, father, brother, father-in-law and relatives etc. all condemn the husband without the wife, O Swami! Please don't go anywhere, whatever is destined for you will be received here.'

The Brahmin did not go abroad following the advice of the woman. This is how time kept passing. Once Kaundinya Rishi came there.

Seeing the sage, Brahmin Sumedha and his wife bowed down to him and said- 'Today we are blessed. Your vision made our life successful today. He gave seat and food to the sage. After giving food, the devoted Brahmin said - 'O Rishivar! Please tell me the method to destroy poverty. I have stopped my husband from going abroad and earning money. By my luck you have come. I have full faith that now my poverty will be destroyed soon, so you tell me some solution to destroy our poverty.

After listening to Brahmin, Kaundinya Rishi said - 'O Brahmin! All sins, sorrows and poverty etc. are destroyed by fasting on the Param Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Mal month. The person who observes this fast becomes rich. In this fast, there should be night vigil along with dance, singing etc.

Lord Shankar had made Kuberji the head of wealth by observing this fast. Due to the effect of this fast, the truthful king Harishchandra got son, wife and kingdom.

After that, Rishi Kaundinya told her all the rituals of fasting on Ekadashi. The sage said - 'O Brahmin! Panchratri fast is even better than this. On the day of Param Ekadashi, early in the morning, after retiring from daily work, the Pancharatri fast should be started according to the law. The people who keep waterless fast for five days, they go to heaven along with their parents and wife. Those people who eat food in the evening for five days, they go to heaven. Those people who bathe and feed brahmins for five days, they get the fruit of feeding the whole world. The person who donates a horse in this fast gets the fruits of donating to all the three worlds. Those people who donate mole to the best Brahmin, they live in Vishnulok for years equal to the number of mole. Those people who donate a vessel of ghee, they go to the sun world. Those men who remain celibate for five days go to heaven along with the goddesses. Hey Brahmin! You observe this fast with your husband. This will surely lead you to perfection and ultimately to heaven.

As per the promise of Rishi Kaundinya, the Brahmin and his wife fasted for five days on Param Ekadashi. On completion of the fast, the Brahmin's wife saw a prince coming to her place.

The prince, with the inspiration of Brahmaji, gave them a perfect house which was full of all things to live in. Thereafter the prince gave a village for livelihood. In this way, Brahmin and his wife went to heaven after enjoying eternal happiness in this world due to the effect of this fast.

Lord Krishna said - O Arjun! The person who fasts on Param Ekadashi, he gets the fruits of all pilgrimages and yagya etc. Just as Brahmin is the best among the two-legged, cow among the four-legged, Devendra is the best among the gods, in the same way, the month of Adhik (Laund) is the best among the months. Pancharatri in this month is very auspicious. Padmini and Param Ekadashi are also best in this month. All sins are destroyed by his fast, so a poor man must do a fast. Those who do not bathe and observe Ekadashi fast in Adhikamas, they commit the sin of committing suicide. This human birth meets with great virtues, that's why a man must fast on Ekadashi.

Arjun, son of Kunti! I explained in detail what you asked. Now do these fasts with devotion. The people who fast on the Param Ekadashi of Adhik (Laund) month, they go to heaven and enjoy the pleasures like Devraj Indra and are worshiped in all the three worlds.

Synopsis

The Lord definitely blesses those people who respect Brahmins, sages and gentlemen. Sri Lakshmi is not attained by mere running, but for this it is necessary to work diligently. Diligent labor is sure to be accomplished by the grace of the Lord."
