महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिंग कथा

उज्जयिनी में राजा चंद्रसेन का राज था। वह भगवान शिव का परम भक्त था। शिवगणों में मुख्य मणिभद्र नामक गण उसका मित्र था।

एक बार मणिभद्र ने राजा चंद्रसेन को एक अत्यंत तेजोमय 'चिंतामणि' प्रदान की। चंद्रसेन ने इसे गले में धारण किया तो उसका प्रभामंडल तो जगमगा ही उठा, साथ ही दूरस्थ देशों में उसकी यश-कीर्ति बढ़ने लगी। उस 'मणि' को प्राप्त करने के लिए दूसरे राजाओं ने प्रयास आरंभ कर दिए। कुछ ने प्रत्यक्षतः मांग की, कुछ ने विनती की।

चूंकि वह राजा की अत्यंत प्रिय वस्तु थी, अतः राजा ने वह मणि किसी को नहीं दी। अंततः उन पर मणि आकांक्षी राजाओं ने आक्रमण कर दिया। शिवभक्त चंद्रसेन भगवान महाकाल की शरण में जाकर ध्यानमग्न हो गया। जब चंद्रसेन समाधिस्थ था तब वहां कोई गोपी अपने छोटे बालक को साथ लेकर दर्शन हेतु आई।

बालक की उम्र थी पांच वर्ष और गोपी विधवा थी। राजा चंद्रसेन को ध्यानमग्न देखकर बालक भी शिव की पूजा हेतु प्रेरित हुआ। वह कहीं से एक पाषाण ले आया और अपने घर के एकांत स्थल में बैठकर भक्तिभाव से शिवलिंग की पूजा करने लगा।

कुछ देर पश्चात उसकी माता ने भोजन के लिए उसे बुलाया किन्तु वह नहीं आया। फिर बुलाया, वह फिर नहीं आया। माता स्वयं बुलाने आई तो उसने देखा बालक ध्यानमग्न बैठा है और उसकी आवाज सुन नहीं रहा है।

तब क्रुद्ध हो माता ने उस बालक को पीटना शुरू कर दिया और समस्त पूजन-सामग्री उठाकर फेंक दी। ध्यान से मुक्त होकर बालक चेतना में आया तो उसे अपनी पूजा को नष्ट देखकर बहुत दुःख हुआ। अचानक उसकी व्यथा की गहराई से चमत्कार हुआ।

भगवान शिव की कृपा से वहां एक सुंदर मंदिर निर्मित हो गया। मंदिर के मध्य में दिव्य शिवलिंग विराजमान था एवं बालक द्वारा सज्जित पूजा यथावत थी। उसकी माता की तंद्रा भंग हुई तो वह भी आश्चर्यचकित हो गई।

राजा चंद्रसेन को जब शिवजी की अनन्य कृपा से घटित इस घटना की जानकारी मिली तो वह भी उस शिवभक्त बालक से मिलने पहुंचा। अन्य राजा जो मणि हेतु युद्ध पर उतारू थे, वे भी पहुंचे।

सभी ने राजा चंद्रसेन से अपने अपराध की क्षमा मांगी और सब मिलकर भगवान महाकाल का पूजन-अर्चन करने लगे।

तभी वहां रामभक्त श्री हनुमानजी अवतरित हुए और उन्होंने गोप-बालक को गोद में बैठाकर सभी राजाओं और उपस्थित जनसमुदाय को संबोधित किया।

ऋते शिवं नान्यताम गतिरस्ति शरीरिणाम्‌॥
एवं गोप सुतो दिष्टया शिवपूजां विलोक्य च॥
अमन्त्रेणापि सम्पूज्य शिवं शिवम्‌ वाप्तवान्‌।
एष भक्तवरः शम्भोर्गोपानां कीर्तिवर्द्धनः
इह भुक्तवा खिलान्‌ भोगानन्ते मोक्षमवाप्स्यति॥
अस्य वंशेऽष्टमभावी नंदो नाम महायशाः।
प्राप्स्यते तस्यस पुत्रत्वं कृष्णो नारायणः स्वयम्‌॥

अर्थात 'शिव के अतिरिक्त प्राणियों की कोई गति नहीं है। इस गोप बालक ने अन्यत्र शिव पूजा को मात्र देखकर ही, बिना किसी मंत्र अथवा विधि-विधान के शिव आराधना कर शिवत्व-सर्वविध, मंगल को प्राप्त किया है।

यह शिव का परम श्रेष्ठ भक्त समस्त गोपजनों की कीर्ति बढ़ाने वाला है। इस लोक में यह अखिल अनंत सुखों को प्राप्त करेगा व मृत्योपरांत मोक्ष को प्राप्त होगा। इसी के वंश का आठवां पुरुष महायशस्वी 'नंद' होगा जिसके पुत्र के रूप में स्वयं नारायण 'कृष्ण' नाम से प्रतिष्ठित होंगे।

King Chandrasen was ruling in Ujjayini. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. Among the Shivganas, the main Gana named Manibhadra was his friend.

Once Manibhadra gave a very shining 'Chintamani' to King Chandrasena. When Chandrasen wore it around his neck, his aura was lit up, and his fame started increasing in distant countries. Other kings started efforts to get that 'gem'. Some demanded directly, some pleaded.

Since it was very dear to the king, the king did not give that gem to anyone. Ultimately, they were attacked by gem-aspirant kings. Shiv devotee Chandrasen went to the shelter of Lord Mahakal and became meditative. When Chandrasen was in the tomb, then a Gopi came there for darshan with her small child.

The child was five years old and Gopi was a widow. Seeing King Chandrasen meditating, the child was also inspired to worship Shiva. He brought a stone from somewhere and sat in a secluded place in his house and started worshiping the Shivling with devotion.

After some time his mother called him for food but he did not come. Called again, he did not come again. When the mother herself came to call, she saw that the child was sitting in meditation and was not listening to her voice.

Then the angry mother started beating that child and threw away all the worship material. When the child came to consciousness after being free from meditation, he was very sad to see his worship destroyed. Suddenly, from the depths of his sorrow, a miracle happened.

By the grace of Lord Shiva, a beautiful temple was built there. The divine Shivling was sitting in the middle of the temple and the puja prepared by the child was as it was. When his mother's sleep was disturbed, she was also surprised.

When King Chandrasen came to know about this incident that happened due to the unique grace of Lord Shiva, he also went to meet that child who was a devotee of Lord Shiva. Other kings who were ready to fight for the gem also arrived.

Everyone apologized to King Chandrasen for their crime and all together started worshiping Lord Mahakal.

That's why the devotee of Ram Shri Hanumanji incarnated there and he addressed all the kings and the people present by sitting on the lap of the cow-child.

Rite Shiva Nanyatam Gatirasti Shaaririnam ॥
And Gop Suto Dishtaya Shivpuja Vilkya Ch.
Amantrenapi Sampoojya Shivam Shivam Vaptawan.
Esh Bhaktavar: Shambhorgopanan Kirtivardhan
Ih bhaktava khilan bhoganante mokshamvaapsyati ॥
Asya Vansheshtambhavi Nando Naam Mahayasha.
Prapsyate Tasyas Putratvam Krishna Narayan: Swayam ॥

Means 'There is no movement of beings except Shiva. This gop boy has attained Shivatva-Sarvavidh, auspiciousness by worshiping Shiva without any mantra or rituals, just by seeing Shiva worship elsewhere.

This supreme devotee of Shiva is going to increase the fame of all the cowherds. In this world, he will get all the infinite happiness and will get salvation after death. The eighth male of his lineage will be the great-acclaimed 'Nand', as whose son Narayan himself will be known as 'Krishna'.
