मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग कथा

कर्नाटक के कृष्णा जिले में मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप में महादेव शिव का महादेवी सहित वास है। यह ज्योतिर्लिंग कृष्णा नदी के तट पर श्री शैल पर्वत पर है। धर्म ग्रंथों में कहा गया है कि श्री शैल के दर्शन मात्र से ही सभी कष्ट दूर हो जाते हैं। इस ज्योतिर्लिंग की स्थापना से जुड़ी कथा इस प्रकार है−

भगवान शिव के दोनों पुत्र श्रीगणेश और स्वामी कार्तिकेय में इस बात पर विवाद हो गया कि पहले किसका विवाह हो। इस पर पिता भगवान शिवजी और माता पार्वती ने कहा कि जो पहले धरती की परिक्रमा करके लौटेगा उसी का विवाह पहले कराया जाएगा। इस पर फुर्तीले कार्तिकेय तुरंत परिक्रमा के लिए निकल गए लेकिन श्रीगणेश चूंकि शरीर से मोटे थे, इसलिए वह उस फुर्ती से नहीं निकल पाए और इसके लिए उन्होंने नया उपाय ढूंढ निकाला। 

शास्त्रों के अनुसार, माता−पिता की पूजा धरती की ही परिक्रमा मानी जाती है और उसका भी वही फल मिलता है जोकि पूरी धरती की परिक्रमा से मिलता है। इस उपाय के ध्यान में आते ही श्रीगणेश जी ने माता पार्वती और पिता शिव शंकर को आसन पर बिठाकर उनकी पूजा शुरू कर दी। इससे प्रसन्न होकर भगवान शिव शंकर ने उनकी शादी विश्वरूप प्रजापति की दो कन्याओं रिद्धि और सिद्धि से करा दी।

इधर जब तक स्वामी कार्तिकेय धरती की परिक्रमा करके माता−पिता के पास पहुंचे तब तक श्रीगणेश जी क्षेम और लाभ नाम के दो पुत्रों के पिता भी बन चुके थे। इस पर कार्तिकेय माता−पिता के पैर छूने के बाद रूठकर क्रौंच पर्वत पर चले गए। माता−पिता बाद में उन्हें मनाने के लिए मल्लिका और अर्जुन के रूप में वहां गए तो उनके आने की खबर सुनते ही कार्तिकेय वहां से भागकर तीन योजन पर चले गए। क्रौंच पर्वत (श्री शैल) क्षेत्र के निवासियों के कल्याण हेतु भगवान शिव शंकर और माता पार्वती वहीं ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप में बस गए।

Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga Katha

Mahadev Shiva resides with Mahadevi in the form of Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga in Krishna district of Karnataka. This Jyotirlinga is on the Shri Shail mountain on the banks of Krishna river. It has been said in the religious texts that all the troubles go away just by having a darshan of Shri Shail. The story related to the establishment of this Jyotirlinga is as follows-

There was a dispute between Lord Shiva's two sons Shri Ganesh and Swami Kartikeya as to who should get married first. On this, father Lord Shiva and mother Parvati said that the one who returns first after circumambulating the earth will be married first. On this, agile Kartikeya immediately left for parikrama, but since Shri Ganesh was fat, he could not get out of that agility and for this he found a new solution.

According to the scriptures, the worship of parents is considered as circumambulation of the earth and it also gives the same result as that of circumambulation of the whole earth. As soon as this remedy came to mind, Shri Ganesh ji started worshiping Mother Parvati and Father Shiv Shankar by making them sit on the seat. Pleased with this, Lord Shiva Shankar got him married to Riddhi and Siddhi, the two daughters of Vishwaroop Prajapati.

Here, by the time Lord Kartikeya reached his parents after circumambulating the earth, Lord Ganesha had become the father of two sons named Kshem and Labh. On this, after touching the feet of the parents, Kartikeya got angry and went to Kraunch mountain. The parents later went there in the form of Mallika and Arjuna to persuade them, then on hearing the news of their arrival, Kartikeya ran away from there and went on three plans. Lord Shiva Shankar and Mother Parvati settled there in the form of Jyotirlinga for the welfare of the residents of Kraunch Parvat (Shri Shail) region.
