सोम प्रदोष व्रत कथा

पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार एक नगर में एक ब्राह्मणी रहती थी। उसके पति का स्वर्गवास हो गया था। उसका अब कोई सहारा नहीं था इसलिए वह सुबह होते ही वह अपने पुत्र के साथ भीख मांगने निकल पड़ती थी। वह खुद का और अपने पुत्र का पेट पालती थी।

एक दिन ब्राह्मणी घर लौट रही थी तो उसे एक लड़का घायल अवस्था में कराहता हुआ मिला। ब्राह्मणी दयावश उसे अपने घर ले आई। वह लड़का विदर्भ का राजकुमार था। शत्रु सैनिकों ने उसके राज्य पर आक्रमण कर उसके पिता को बंदी बना लिया था और राज्य पर नियंत्रण कर लिया था इसलिए वह मारा-मारा फिर रहा था। राजकुमार ब्राह्मण-पुत्र के साथ ब्राह्मणी के घर रहने लगा।

एक दिन अंशुमति नामक एक गंधर्व कन्या ने राजकुमार को देखा तो वह उस पर मोहित हो गई। अगले दिन अंशुमति अपने माता-पिता को राजकुमार से मिलाने लाई। उन्हें भी राजकुमार पसंद आ गया। कुछ दिनों बाद अंशुमति के माता-पिता को शंकर भगवान ने स्वप्न में आदेश दिया कि राजकुमार और अंशुमति का विवाह कर दिया जाए। वैसा ही किया गया।

ब्राह्मणी प्रदोष व्रत करने के साथ ही भगवान शंकर की पूजा-पाठ किया करती थी। प्रदोष व्रत के प्रभाव और गंधर्वराज की सेना की सहायता से राजकुमार ने विदर्भ से शत्रुओं को खदेड़ दिया और पिता के साथ फिर से सुखपूर्वक रहने लगा। राजकुमार ने ब्राह्मण-पुत्र को अपना प्रधानमंत्री बनाया। मान्यता है कि जैसे ब्राह्मणी के प्रदोष व्रत के प्रभाव से दिन बदले, वैसे ही भगवान शंकर अपने भक्तों के दिन फेरते हैं।

Enemy soldiers invaded his kingdom, took his father prisoner and took control of the kingdom, so he was roaming around. The prince started living in the Brahmin's house with the Brahmin's son.

One day a Gandharva girl named Anshumati saw the prince and she fell in love with him. The next day Anshumati brought her parents to meet the prince. He also liked the prince. 

A few days later, Anshumati's parents were ordered by Lord Shankar in a dream to get the prince and Anshumati married. That is what was done.

Kyon Manai Jaati Hai Holika Dahan Kya Hai Iske Piche Ki Katha

Brahmins used to worship Lord Shankar along with observing Pradosh Vrat. With the influence of Pradosh Vrat and the help of Gandharvaraj's army, the prince drove out the enemies from Vidarbha and lived happily again with his father. The prince made the Brahmin-son his prime minister. It is believed that Lord Shankar changes the days of his devotees just as the days change due to the effect of Pradosh Vrat of Brahmins.
