भगवान शिव और नागराज वासुकि का अटूट संबंध

वैदिक धर्मग्रन्थों में बताया गया है कि भगवान शिव के गले में लिपटे हुए सांप का नाम वासुकि है, जिन्हें सभी नागों का राजा कहा जाता है। कथा के अनुसार हिमालय में नाग वंश के लोग वास करते थे, जिन्हें भगवान शिव से बहुत लगाव था। इन्हीं में से एक नागराज वासुकि भगवान शिव के परम भक्त थे। नागराज वासुकि की भक्ति से प्रसन्न होकर भोलेनाथ ने उन्हें अपने गले में धारण करने का वरदान दिया था और तब से वह अमर हो गए। भगवान श्री कृष्ण और समुद्र मंथन से जुड़ता है नागराज का संबंध किवदंतियों के अनुसार जब भगवान श्री कृष्ण को उनके पिता वासुदेव गोकुल ले जा रहे थे, तब नागराज वासुकि ने ही यमुना के तूफान में उनकी रक्षा की थी। इसके साथ जब देवताओं और दैत्यों के बीच अमृत प्राप्त करने के लिए समुद्र मंथन किया गया था, उस दौरान मेरू पर्वत को मथने के लिए वासुकि नाग का ही रस्सी के रूप में प्रयोग लिया गया था। इसी दौरान समुद्र मंथन के दौरान निकले विष को भगवान शिव ने गले में धारण कर लिया था और घर्षण के कारण वासुकि लहूलुहान हो गए थे। पुराणों में यह भी बताया गया है कि नागराज वासुकि के सिर पर नागमणि स्थपित है।
